There used to be someone in one of my fandoms who would leave comments on people's fics like "Ha ha, I'm underage but I read this anyway!" Finally people starting locking their fics. I tried talking to them about it but it didn't go well. So if all they did was "like" it and you just happen to know they're 14, I wouldn't worry about it.

Proof positive she wasn't mature enough to be reading porn.

I can totally understand being creeped out. There isn't much you can do though on sites where everything is public and there are no age restrictions or f-locks.

If you approached them I think it would just end up awkward on all sides.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you do have your blog marked as NSFW in the settings, right? So that means that that 14 year old had to put in their settings that they were okay with seeing that content. I think you ass is covered here.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I got creeped out when 13 and 14 year olds reviewed my M rated stuff on FF.net - and I won't post anything that should be rated any higher than M there.

I pretend like they don't exist and I never saw them. I did my bit in rating and warning, it's a shame that they are not mature enough to return the favor and at least try to hide how young they are.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
and at least try to hide how young they are

this is key, thing, i hear, to protect everyone involved

like, be a precious teen if you want, but don't get anyone else in trouble too

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I moved all my porn to a sideblog after going to a con and meeting some underage fans. They weren't bad and I didn't see why I should keep myself from talking to them just because of that.

I mean, I read smutfic when I was 14. I know if they really want it, they'll find it. But yeah, no way in hell am I gonna be the one providing it.

To clarify, before I made the sideblog I had a note on my blog saying that it was for adults only, and would block any underage followers.

I started in writing-based RPGs when I was 15 for groups that clearly said, "We often write violence, sex, drugs, etc, and many of us are BNF/adult fanfic writers with reps to keep: NO KIDS ALLOWED." So I lied about my age and joined anyway. I know it would've bothered the other writers if they knew I was just a kid, because I was part of one game for 2 years and another for a little over 6, I got to interact daily, IC and OOC, with people that actually really knew their shit, and in time I learned from them and became a MUCH better writer. Plus it was all loads of fun.

/tl;dr When it comes to fandom, age is just a number. Give your babyfaced audience the benefit of the doubt. We all gotta start somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, i was with you until your tl;dr

it's very, very awkward - and possibly could put you in real trouble - to be on the other side of the fence

if they admit they're underage, just say sorry and block them

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. Fandom is no one's parent.

I can understand it but... yeah, I don't know many people that started getting into the older side of fandom just after they became of age. I also remember hiding my age when I started, as a general rule of thumb. It's possible more underaged fans 'liked' your fics before but you just don't know that.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird how when you're underage you don't care about reading and writing smut, but when you're of age and see a 15 years old write a sex scene for a kink meme you get all weirded out. I know that feel.

I'm really muddled about this one, mostly because it's very possible (even easy) for minors to produce their own porn that gets them off, like fanfic and fanart. I get that people can get in trouble if minors access their porn, but it seems weird to be uncomfortable with the combination of minors and porn, and also weird for it to be illegal for an adult to unwittingly provide porn to a minor when a minor can do it themselves. Or is it illegal for minors to produce porn of adult people/characters, even without the knowledge/participation of the people?

tl;dr: "The system" is likely flawed, and I personally don't agree that I should fret that I'll be held accountable for its lack of acceptance of reality.

Okay, I am clearly the worst person on this thread - I once gave a minor pornfic for their birthday and I don't regret it. That was a few years ago, and we're still friends.

No one cards you if you go into a store and buy a book that has an explicit scene in it. I (accidentally) bought some explicit hentai in a store when I was 17, never mind text. Effectively no one gets 'carded' on the internet either - very few porn writers actually put their work somewhere where there's any level of age verifiction of the readership. I really don't need any hypocrisy about it; I wish I'd read more good porn when I was a teenager.

Isn't it illegal to provide minors with pornography? I thought for some reason it was, and that smut or erotic fiction and art counted as such. So yeah, I'd be creeped out just because of that.

I think a big part of the problem is that the underage kids reading it do not think about or even really know about the trouble they could be getting others into.

I am pretty sure I was reading smut fic by the time I was 14, maybe even earlier (but since I focus more on dialogue than description I hardly noticed, really), but it wasn't until after I reached 18 that I even heard that fanfic writers could possibly have legal action taken against them because underage teens found their fic.

But I was also naturally cautious as a teen and always pretended to be 18. Now, fandom seems to be even bigger than it was six or seven years ago when I first came into it, and teenagers seem to generally be less cautious than they used to about their identity. (Something that makes no sense considering how much it is talked about, even in school, that you should be careful online.)

Better they read it on the internet than go out and have kinky sex all over the place themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I find it kind of hilarious that people really believe there could be legal action taken against them for fanfic. I'm laughing imagining the situation: "So, what did this awful criminal do to end up here, Mr?" "Oh well, they wrote about [insert pairing] getting it on and now they will rot in jail forever, of course".

Geez, I love the Internet and paranoid people so much.

Odd, I was having sex when I was 14... Reading porn wouldn't exactly be damaging my virgin soul or anything.

But I guess people react differently to young people and sexuality depending on the country/society/and so on.

Edit: What I was going to say was even when you are young you can be sexual, and even as some people have pointed out actually write your own porn. So you shouldn't feel freaked out OP.

Whenever this topic comes up, all I can think about is the fact that, at the tender age of 15, I wrote my first piece of porny fanfic. While on a forum dedicated to the source material, I came across a woman in her 30s who had recommended said fic as the best smut she'd read in the fandom.

At the time, I was beside myself, and sheepishly thanked her. Now, looking back, I can hardly believe it. I hadn't even actually had sex yet, for Christ's sake!

It serves me well as an important reminder, however. Not only might my fic be read by a minor, but that smut I just read and thoroughly enjoyed might have been written by one. The concept of age-based boundaries doesn't work well in fandom.

I'm just gonna go headdesk and wonder why kids these days who want to read smut don't lie about their age like we all used to.

I'm sure some of them do, and we'd never know, but there are plenty of them who don't and I just don't even.

Oh man, I know how you feel, OP. I mean, I get weirded out enough as it is when I find out any of my followers on tumblr are middle/high school age (I was literally "HOLY SHIT, THIS PERSON IS MY ELDEST NIECE'S AGE [13 at the time], WHAT THE FUCKITY FUCK *panics, feels old, absconds for the night*"), so posting anything of a porny nature tends to be very rare, if at all (I think the most I post is sex ed stuff, but considering most schools suck at providing sex ed, I'd rather them show friends my blog than try it out themselves before they're ready). Still, kinda freaks me out after having been the youngest in many groups online for so many years even if many weren't privy to that fact bc I knew how to keep up a needed charade. @_@

Wow, so many comments that amount to "don't TELL me if you're underage, I'll worry that the police will come after me!" It's ... better than having people who read erotica before they were 18 disapproving of contemporary kids reading it, but I still don't like the implications.

If someone is under 18, and they read my stuff, it's up to them whether to tell me or not. I will not unfriend them or treat them any differently because I was born first.

None of what I write is aimed at kids, but I believe in having a self-selected audience. Adultism is morally repugnant.
