I started in writing-based RPGs when I was 15 for groups that clearly said, "We often write violence, sex, drugs, etc, and many of us are BNF/adult fanfic writers with reps to keep: NO KIDS ALLOWED." So I lied about my age and joined anyway. I know it would've bothered the other writers if they knew I was just a kid, because I was part of one game for 2 years and another for a little over 6, I got to interact daily, IC and OOC, with people that actually really knew their shit, and in time I learned from them and became a MUCH better writer. Plus it was all loads of fun.

/tl;dr When it comes to fandom, age is just a number. Give your babyfaced audience the benefit of the doubt. We all gotta start somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, i was with you until your tl;dr

it's very, very awkward - and possibly could put you in real trouble - to be on the other side of the fence

if they admit they're underage, just say sorry and block them

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. Fandom is no one's parent.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
However, I can see what it looks like from the parents' (and their lawyers') point of view.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Yeah, this is the main problem, fandom may not be their parent but adults have a right to be uncomfortable with it because adults are the ones who stand to get in the most trouble if someone underage is looking at their porn. A teen may get grounded but an adult could potentially get in real legal trouble if they're not careful.

I looked at that stuff when I was underage too, but I didn't publicly announce my age when reading smutty fic either, just because I could find it doesn't mean I needed to get anyone else in trouble because of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I've just never heard about someone getting in trouble across the internet because a teenager's parents tracked down the writer of the smut their kid read.

I'm not frantic about minors reading my fic, which is no worse than published stuff a minor could legally buy. But the idea of actually RPing smut with a minor skeeves the hell out of me. I guess it's all for the good that I don't RP.

Yep.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I don't care what they read, but I really have no desire to RP porn with a 12 year old.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Fwiw I tried RPing smut as a high-school aged minor and I was fucking terrible at it, so you could probably tell if you were RPing with a minor, should you choose to get into it. I also got into some skeevy cybering situations a couple times. And looking back, I now understand where you're coming from. It feels, at least to me, way too intimate a relationship to have with a minor (the writing relationship, that is).

I'm not sure what the point of this comment was, I just felt compelled to post it. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Don't apologize, you're making perfect sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
The intimacy factor is exactly the reason why I have no issue with minors reading porn, but I have absolutely no desire to RP smut with them. With fic, it's already there and done, but RP is so interactive and at times can be like borderline cybering.

+1000

I can't believe the number of people who are like "hide the p0rn from the kids!!1!" (and I'd dare say most of them read smut in their teens.. oh, hypocrisy!)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
not necessarily hide it, so much as put big "you are telling me you are an adult if you click/view this, so no take backs, capice" messages or splash pages to cover your ass

if the minor keeps their minority hush hush and they're just one more hit/reader, all's good

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with people putting up a message saying that, but it bothers me when they say they block users if they find out they are underage (although it's true that any teen worth their weight in salt knows to always lie about their age so it may be moot after all)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
At the time, I had a note that said my blog was for adults only. They stated on the top of their blog that they were 13 and actually if I recall correctly, followed me mere minutes after I put the note up.

Sorry that bothers you, but I feel like I'm allowed to block anyone for any reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not really hypocrisy. There is a big difference between reading fic as a teen and having underage kids read porn you have written as an adult.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
When you're reading porn as a teen, you're an underage person reading porn that could have been written by an adult.

The hypocrisy is in saying, "it was okay for me to read this sort of thing when I was a teen, but it's not okay for current teens to read my writing because it makes me uncomfortable."

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't really care if some kid is reading porn fic. I'm just not going to give it to them.

Anon below put it best. It's not about 'caring' because, well, hypocrisy and all that. It's more like saying 'DON'T tell me so I can say I honestly had no idea in case we're found out'. In some countries, writing adult fic that is read by a minor can get you in serious legal problems even if you never intended it for minors.

Personally I think that if you're underage and you want to read/see porn, more power to you. But learn to lie about your age so you don't get in trouble and don't get others in trouble either.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't about underaged kids reading porn though. Most people seriously don't care about that. It's about maintaining plausible deniability so people can't get shut down or sued.

The difference is who is taking responsibility for their reading habits. If the teen tells everyone they are underage, what they are doing is foisting the responsibility (and consequences) of their reading on the adults. If they lie, they are absolving the adults of responsibility and taking all the consequences themselves.

And there are consequences. We in fandom also live in the real world and have to deal with people who do not share fandom's values. Especially role players, communities, and archives that have porn need to be wary. Being tarnished as a sex offender is no small matter.

Reminds me of the Pit back in days of old, when every time you clicked on a porn fic a pop-up asked you to push a button to confirm you were over 17. LOL.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Or the individual fan sites and archives where you had to read some long winded info-paragraph to figure out where the hell to click to get into the site. MEMORIES.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
those were my fav

they sure bet the ones that required you to join a yahoo group or to e-mail your date of birth to the admin so they could confirm you were an adult
