I'm just gonna go headdesk and wonder why kids these days who want to read smut don't lie about their age like we all used to.

I'm sure some of them do, and we'd never know, but there are plenty of them who don't and I just don't even.

someone upthread pointed out that there are simply more people on the internet now, and that the approach we had (covering our identities) is all but gone (what with almost everyone having their facebooks and connecting everything to everything, displaying their real names and ages and friends and school and so on)

before, being online wasn't what everyone did, but now it is

It's one reason why I won't connect anything to anything. Even on Facebook, I won't say jack shit about myself if I don't have to.

that's smart

Whereas I am just trying to figure out whether "liked" it means that the OP has been posting porn to Facebook. Because that concept just does not compute, for me.

My guess? Tumblr.

Nah "liking" things is a tumblr thing too.

Plenty of them do.

It's worth noting that adults have always been the worst offenders when it comes to being completely naive online. Remember back in the day when most 18+ people's e-mail consisted of [FirstNameLastName]@genericserver.com?

But there's been a ton of contradictory information published on whether privacy exists online and prudent people should take the trouble to maintain it. Anonymity is for criminals vs. anonymity protects you.

And in my experience, it depends a lot on where you hang out whether keeping to yourself is parsed as reasonable behavior or awfully unfriendly. I was amazed at the culture of sharing everything with complete strangers that used to exist on LJ, before something kicked off wave after wave of f-locking. And you know what? I miss it. I owe countless people who would have been complete strangers if they hadn't been pouring their hearts out to the world at large. They're part of what convinced me to de-lurk.
