someone upthread pointed out that there are simply more people on the internet now, and that the approach we had (covering our identities) is all but gone (what with almost everyone having their facebooks and connecting everything to everything, displaying their real names and ages and friends and school and so on)

before, being online wasn't what everyone did, but now it is
