Nah, a lot of people dislike Firefly--it got cancelled, remember?

That was actually more of FOX's executives doing than anything else. Like the other anon said- they gave it ridiculous time slots, and aired the episodes out of order (not to mention- out of the 14 episodes- 3 of them never even got aired). And the original 2-part pilot episode "Serenity" never even got aired until the very end of when FOX was even airing the episodes (at least from what I've read).

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Watched it at the time and I can confirm this, massive episode order fuckery led to a crapload of confusion at the time, to the point where we were like WHAT??? when Serenity finally aired.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...I thought Serenity was the sequel! (I've watched neither.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Serenity is also the name of the movie sequel that came out years after the original TV broadcast ended.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see! Thanks!

(Nah, it's cool- I'll explain.) There are two 'Serenity''s actually. There's the movie sequel, that's titled "Serenity", and there was the original TV series pilot that was also titled "Serenity" which was a 2-episode story. Hope that helps. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh! That makes more sense. Thank you!

Oh, for FUCKS' SAKE. Yes, Fox messed around with the show. But you know what else? The show wasn't that great. It wasn't some OMG UBER AWESOMEZ show that only died because of network fuckery. It was okay, sometimes. It was schizophrenic; at no point did it ever choose between wanting to be a western in space or space in a western.

The show didn't get cancelled because Fox were arseholes. It got cancelled because not enough people watched it and it wasn't very good. The end.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you watch it at the time? Because, um... the fuckery was kind of blatant.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)

"Space western" is a well-established genre, fyi. Firefly had its issues, but lack of a solid genre was not one of them, not by a long shot.

Methinks you misunderstand the nature of "space western" and "genre buster".

Also, it was the first season. Can you imagine judging the quality of Buffy the Vampire Slayer based solely on it's first season?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
sadly, many many shows never get past their first season, and we'll never know what could have become of them :\ Firefly isn't really unique in that.

Yes? That's why I watched it, because I liked the goofy humor, the stupid premise treated all seriously, and the fact that the show itself didn't take itself seriously. And then it grew and it became better. But the first season is by no means 'bad'

I've cooled off on Firefly as the years have gone by, but there's absolutely no doubt that it wasn't given enough of a chance or enough marketing. "Arseholes" indicates that you're British, so maybe you're not familiar with Fox, IDK, but they're notorious for picking up very good original shows and then slaughtering them if they don't immediately outperform their ratings expectations, no matter how poorly they're scheduled or marketed. It's not a very good system.

To say "not enough people watched it" after only a few episodes... I mean, some of the most successful shows of all time (Seinfeld, for example) had low-performing first seasons.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
God, Fox. WTF. Do you remember Drive? I think they actually aired four episodes before pulling it because it wasn't the king of all ratings ever. They promised to eventually air the remaining finished episodes when they cancelled it, and it was never heard of again.

Plus Better off Ted, which was a true tragedy, because it was fucking hilarious. And Arrested Development is the obvious one, of course.

LOL oops, Better off Ted was ABC. Screw you too, ABC, that show was brilliant.

What's it like to go through life behaving like a colossal piece of shit?

Someone ought to off you.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Woooooah that escalated quickly.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
You are obviously not familiar with the Firefly fandom. This is pretty normal.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not part of Firefly fandom. I just think they're a piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I am in fandom and I am a Firefly fan but I confess I am not a member of the Firefly fandom, which is probably why all this FIREFLY FANS ARE CRAZY thing astounded me until just now.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY APOLOGIZE, INTERNET. SOME OF US LOVE JOSS WHEDON AND ARE NOT PSYCHOTIC.

I dunno...I think there might be a new troll who posts over-the-top comments like that.

Not that there aren't genuinely crazy fans out there.

Whether you think the show is great or not has nothing to do with ratings, I think GLEE is a colossal piece of shit, that doesn't effect how many people watch it each week.

And while objectively I don't think Firefly would ever pull GLEE ratings, I do think cancellation is entirely because FOX wanted it off, the things they did are just not things you do to a show you are entirely supporting. I WANTED to watch the show and I had a difficult time doing it because of their fuckery.

Maybe it never would have lasted to have 6 seasons and movie. But maybe 2 or 3 seasons? And the original following would have been bigger instead of everyone having to discover the show after it was already gone. Of all the fandoms I'm in for somewhat-current series I think Firefly has the largest amount of fans who never even got a chance to watch the original run.

I think half the "fans" think it's really a piece of shit much of the time. The thing is, because it's a network darling it can get away with that.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's kind of the point, no?
