yeah, the sticky caps can be a bit much, but the lack of capitalization or punctuation is one of the reasons WHY i actually really enjoy conversing on tumblr

because if you think about it, the language over there usually more accurately reflects how people speak irl, especially excitable, enthusiastic fans and such - we talk really fast, our volume changes (hence the seNTENCES LIKE THIS!!!!), and sometimes it can create a more serious/deadpan effect than any proper sentence could imo

the linguistics of tumblr is actually pretty fascinating when you think about the fact they've literally created a whole new dialect of english

disclaimer: this comment is coming from someone who has made it her career to adhere to grammar and fix other people's mistakes (i'm an editor) but i don't think it's omg so blasphemous!!!!! to kick back on the internet and take a break from all that for a while, and in fact most of the people i know who type like this are in the same boat. you can't fuck around with language until you fully understand it.

i also meant to add that ending sentences with ????? doesn't bother me at all/also makes a lot of sense, inflection is everything! take a moment to listen to how you speak irl and try to notice all of the times you might trail off at the end of your sentence or raise the pitch of your voice at the end even if you're not necessarily asking a question. you might be surprised.

Your last sentence confirms you to be a moron and I don't want you anywhere near my proof-required anything. And laziness is not a dialect.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
good 2 kno, i wouldn't want to publish you anyway

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, publishing people who use proper grammar, punctuation, and capitalization must negatively impact your bottom line.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
laziness is not a dialect

It is on tumblr. Laziness is the defining trait of tumblr culture. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the tags you read I guess.

No, that's a group. A group of the lazy. Being lazy together in the same way.

Even if we assume your right, and it should be recognized as a true dialect, then all that means is we have a new class of people to rightfully scorn.

I deserved that.

no fun allowed

Speaking as a writer myself, I fundamentally don't understand your last paragraph. I cannot wrap my head around the notion that grammar and punctuation are that one might want to "take a break from" while still writing. That's sort of like "taking a break from" vowels.

MTE

It bothers me to type out anything creative in anything but good grammar. I'll only type deliberately badly when on IRC. I'm not sure why it's such an effort to type properly; it has been an effort for me occasionally to type improperly.

"Why would anyone want to take a break from rules that are occasionally subjective, vary by region, and are not always intuitive to everyone?" <--You

I love English and grammar as much as the next anon, but it's not hard to understand why some people don't.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Next time I go driving in another country, I'm going to follow this philosophy, just for fun. When the cops walk up after my several car pile up, I'll just say, hey, your driving rules are occasionally subjective, vary by region, and are not always intuitive by everyone! I'm trying to take a -break- here!

I know, lives and property aren't on the line where good grammar is concerned. But whether or not I believe you to be an intelligent, thoughtful person or someone pounding on their keyboard in-between Springer reruns is wholly and entirely up to you. And possibly me. But also you.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That analogy is really far-fetched precisely because lives and property aren't on the line with tumblrspeak. You get to think they sound stupid, but that tells me a lot more about you than about them.

What's a lot closer to reality is how this conversation is like people speaking different varieties of English complaining about how the others are IDIOTS who CLEARLY DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE because they pronounce the word 'new' the wrong way and use/don't use intrusive 'r' and pronounce/don't pronounce the letter 'h', and don't know what a biscuit is supposed to be.

FFS, people. Sociolects: they exist.

"Why would anyone not want a break from the ability to make their written thoughts clearer and easier to read by others?" <--You

Nobody's talking about splitting infinitives or ending sentences with prepositions here. Please tell me in what dialect or subculture capitalizing the first word of a sentence, proper names, and the word "I" is subjective or varies by region.

I could understand wanting to take a break from writing, because some people find putting their thoughts into words to be work rather than pleasurable, but basic grammar and punctuation are part of successful written communication. Go back to what I said about "taking a break" from vowels. A block of text in all lowercase, with no sentence breaks or commas separating clauses, can be deciphered by a reader, just like writing with all the vowels omitted can be deciphered by a reader -- but if you're trying to communicate with other people, what would possess you to force them to do it?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
They haven't created an entirely new dialect of English. That's ridiculous.

Additionally, how does the lack of capitalization and punctuation more accurately reflect the way people talk? Speech includes pauses, beginnings, endings, and shifts in subject.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
How much of a lazy-ass fucking moron are you that not having to press the shift key constitutes a "break?"

I wish I knew the identity of your employers so that I could send this moronic shit to them.

"HEY GUYS, I am one of you. Rad and cool unlike these old fogies! Bunch of losers amirite? I am DOWN with you people. lET'S ROCK!!!1 please accept me"
