Agreed. The general decorum of Tumblr is part of why I struggle to participate over there... When did they all collectively decide to stop using grammar and punctuation? When did it become more fun to post an overused "reaction gif" in lieu of genuine comments, criticism, and conversation?

I think I just have to accept the fact that Tumblr is a language I just don't speak.

"OMFG I Am SCreAMING" - No, you're not. You know most of the people who have intentionally quirky slice of life photos - they're reaction is about as fake as the incident they're retelling.

...this is actually one of the least annoying things about Tumblr, imo. I got used to text speak showing up in other areas years ago, and this is pretty much just an extension of that.

I don't see random capitalization as often as no capitalization at all. For some reason the only thing that really bothers me to the point that I notice it anymore is, my god, THE RUN-ON SENTENCES.

it's an attempt at getting emotion across via the cold language of text on the internet. the new generations emoticons i suppose. there was actually an interesting post (on tumblr ofc) about that but fuck if i am bothered to go find it.

If it's anything to you, I still use proper grammar on Tumblr. Anytime I don't is usually meant to be mocking or sarcastic.

The random capitalizing thing I never saw, and the ending sentences with question marks doesn't bug me. I think you'll get used to it OP. And eventually will join them.

Well yeah there are a lot of young, stupid fans on Tumblr, but there are also a lot of stupid young people on Twitter and Facebook and everything else that involves *following* and *friend-ing*? I know what OP is saying, and it's fair enough if you prefer journal-based fandom, but I just wanted to offer another perspective.

I enjoy tumblr for the pan-fandom feel and looking at pretty things. For those of us who who like proper grammar, we can just get an account for following fans we like and avoid the global tags.

I enjoy talking like that on tumblr, because it's something I don't do in my real life ever, so on tumblr it's just a way for me to relax.

yeah, the sticky caps can be a bit much, but the lack of capitalization or punctuation is one of the reasons WHY i actually really enjoy conversing on tumblr

because if you think about it, the language over there usually more accurately reflects how people speak irl, especially excitable, enthusiastic fans and such - we talk really fast, our volume changes (hence the seNTENCES LIKE THIS!!!!), and sometimes it can create a more serious/deadpan effect than any proper sentence could imo

the linguistics of tumblr is actually pretty fascinating when you think about the fact they've literally created a whole new dialect of english

disclaimer: this comment is coming from someone who has made it her career to adhere to grammar and fix other people's mistakes (i'm an editor) but i don't think it's omg so blasphemous!!!!! to kick back on the internet and take a break from all that for a while, and in fact most of the people i know who type like this are in the same boat. you can't fuck around with language until you fully understand it.

Actually, I've noticed most of Tumblr doesn't use punctuation or capitalization at all. Like those posts going aroud that have 50k+ notes? You'll never see one properly spelled, punctuated, or capitalized. But then there's all these popular posts about literature, proper grammar, etc. It makes no sense. It's very frustrating.

The ending every opinionated sentence with a question mark bugs me the most. It looks passive aggressive as fuck and everyone does it.

I think the wonky and/or lack of punctuation, at least, tends to be because of the comment system. A lot of people seem to model their text posts after the tag system, which is annoying, but it makes a bit of sense.
