I think it's actually supposed to convey how strong a feeling is, instead of an actual feeling specifically. That said, I agree. It's annoying as fuck, and sometimes it actually ended up giving me a headache when they were particularly bad with grammar/typos.

For the record, I'm a native speaker [and don't have the best grammar], but it still drives me up the wall.
