That makes a lot of sense, especially when you put it into context like that.

Forgive me for assuming you meant stupid; dumb means mute but sometimes people use it to mean something else. I thought people meant stupid but it never occurred to me they might mean silly or something else. I don't think of it from an ableist standpoint but rather a semantics one.

It's no problem; I should've been more careful with my wording. To me "stupid" is a pretty harsh word and (when not used in a joking or teasing way) and when I hear it I tend to think it means "thoroughly failing at logical reasoning in a way that makes me (the speaker) dislike them." To me "dumb" is milder and might refer to someone who is a little airheaded, but it doesn't have the same harsh connotations. But you're right that people use it as a synonym for stupid and I should have considered that before using it on people in a debate. (Especially a linguistics-related debate, hah.) That was a fail on my part, and I'm sorry if I offended.

I tend to forget that "dumb" also meant "mute" or "speechless", to the point that when I see it used that way it always takes me a second to think about it. 'xD I admit I'm kind of surprised to meet someone who thinks of "dumb" as meaning "mute" for reasons other than not wanting to sound ableist. Interesting. (Sorry if that sounds rude.)

Nothing you said sounds rude at all :) And I'm sorry if anything I said sounded rude. Thanks for replying to me because you gave me a much-needed perspective on the ways language is evolving on the internet.

Thanks! I'm glad my ramblings were of interest to you. XD And again, thanks for pointing out why my original comment seemed offensive and immature.
