What I meant by “dumb” was closer to “silly” than “stupid.” (I’m not sure why you corrected it to “stupid”, anyway. Was it because “dumb” is ableist?) And I was specifically referring to the people who imitated tumblr-speak but didn’t know what they were doing. It reminded me of people who think they can sound like Shakespeare by replacing all their pronouns with “thy”. Or people who say “Yo my name be Shaniquah and I be gansta yo.” If you’re going to exaggerate someone’s speech for comedy, you have to understand how those people actually speak so you can exaggerate the right things in the right places. Otherwise you sound more obnoxious than funny. And if you’re doing it to make fun of the group of people who uses that speech, you’re advertising the fact that you don’t understand what you’re criticizing, and then the joke’s on you. That’s what I meant when I said they look dumb.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)Forgive me for assuming you meant stupid; dumb means mute but sometimes people use it to mean something else. I thought people meant stupid but it never occurred to me they might mean silly or something else. I don't think of it from an ableist standpoint but rather a semantics one.

I tend to forget that "dumb" also meant "mute" or "speechless", to the point that when I see it used that way it always takes me a second to think about it. 'xD I admit I'm kind of surprised to meet someone who thinks of "dumb" as meaning "mute" for reasons other than not wanting to sound ableist. Interesting. (Sorry if that sounds rude.)
