What I'll never understand... why can't people write this shit in the actual post rather than the tags? You can't find anything on their journal if they use tags in that manner!

It's fine as a witty ending. It's moronic, like most things, when people take it too far.

because whatever you add to the actual post body will go into the reblog notifications that other people receive. some people don't want to bug the OP or whoever they the post from with that, or they just don't want them to see it. personally i sometimes ramble about some little thing semi-related to the post in the tags for my own amusement and that way nobody else has to get bothered with it but my followers. it's like a little aside after the actual post, idk.

and if somebody has their tumblr theme not showing the tags then they suck anyways.

Do people really hate reblog notifications and comments on their posts? I wouldn't think it was that big a deal because you don't have to look at them. (And as far as I know, you can't get emails or anything for those. Which would be insane anyway for people who get a lot of reblogs.)

personally i sometimes ramble about some little thing semi-related to the post in the tags for my own amusement and that way nobody else has to get bothered with it but my followers.

I do understand doing it for this reason, I just don't like it when people use tags like that constantly. (Because like I said, then you can't search anything.)

I don't have my tags on my tumblr but that's more about me being lost over how tumblr works than anything else. I'll have to look at some themes.

hate? no. do i feel like nobody wants to see me going on about how i read a fic like that once or that my dog does that cute thing too? yep. if i actually have something constructive to say about the post or actually adding to it, then i put it in the post, otherwise... no. it's just become How Things Are Done, and i see the point in it so i don't mind abiding by that.

how can you not search anything? if it's a reblog then those wouldn't come up searching through those tags regardless.

even if your theme doesn't show tags by default on the main blog page they should show on the individual post's page, if you needed to search your own tags for something.

Yea, I was only talking about searching through a specific users tags.

Okay then. In that case, in my experience with the people I follow, if people who ramble in the tags put in the post subject tag too. If they're not going to add the subject tags, they usually don't tag posts at all. If it's a personal multifandom blog instead of a themed one (fuckyeah____'s, etc) then sometimes people just don't bother because they don't think anybody would want to go through their posts.

You clearly don't have a problem with using capitalization in general, seeing as you capitalized How Things Are Done. So, why is it that you have a problem with capitalizing the word "I" or the beginnings of sentences? What is it that you are hoping to say by keeping such things lower-case?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Initial capitalizations and single I is usually set to autocorrect in word processing programs. So it might just be a case of rivia being used to having those capitalizations done automatically and types like that even when the automatic capitalizations aren't available.

Apparently, unless you're having a conversation or something (and if it's more than two people keeping track of said conversation is a mess, but that's yet another can of worms) writing in the actual post is frowned upon. REALLTY. You reblog, say, a picture? Plenty of people expect you to put your comments in he tag. I find it annoying as hell, to be honest.
elaminator: (Legend of the Seeker: Richard - Huh?)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
...What? Sometimes I don't get tumblr, at all.

Not that I make many comments on posts anyway, because tumblr is so fast-paced that if I did that I'd spend all day on them, but I guess I'll just stop commenting altogether. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
If you put comments in the post itself and it gets reblogged, say, a dozen times at most, then you get those long, two-word-wide threads that were part of the downfall of Livejournal's style. And you can't collapse the comments made in the post itself.

(A lot of tumblr culture is a direct effect of how shitty tumblr is as a platform, I've found.)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, that makes sense. I still don't like it (or that people feel forced to use it like that because of how clunky tumblr is), but it is what it is and at least I understand people's reasons better now.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-01-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
That is stupid and tumblr is stupid for expecting that. Posts go IN THE POST.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, tumblr makes it really, really hard to use tags because they make it hard to generate a list of tags you've already used. Unless you're installing a custom tag cloud or you use only the most basic tags, tags are pretty much commentary on tumblr.
elaminator: (Hunger Games: Katniss - Trapped)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really thought of it that way because my tags are pretty basic and I don't have problems remembering what I've used. (Plus, suggestions are very helpful.)

If people get complicated with their tags I guess I can see where that could become a problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
When people say that it's hard to keep track of your own tags it weirds me out because since day one tumblr recorded my most used tags and I just have to write a couple of letters before it fills the rest of the tag for me, or gives me a list of the possible tags that i've used before. I think it's a Chrome thing, but surely I'm not the only person using Chrome
elaminator: (Chuck: Sarah)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr does that for me too. I thought it was a thing (I don't use Chrome), but then again I'm not exactly the most informed person on the workings on tumblr.

[personal profile] caterfree10 2013-01-07 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr does that for me too, but it likes to clear out recent tags sometimes. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I use Chrome, and it doesn't do that for me. :/ Maybe it's a settings thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe. Look into enabling "auto complete" or "auto fill"?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It shows me half my tags and very rarely are they the tags I use all the time. IDK, tumblr is dumb.
herongale: (karkat- displeased)

[personal profile] herongale 2013-01-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
It does that for me, but with enough inconsistency that I don't trust it. Like, to grab an example from my own usage: I have gotten to reblogging a LOT of certain a Homestuck pairing lately. When I tag it "eridan x karkat ♥ " that comes up right away, but even though I later took to using "erikar" a lot, it never caught on with tumblr as one of my frequently used tags, so I have to type the whole damn thing out.

It's no big deal, I don't really care, but it annoys me a little with how my list will populate with stuff I've literally used ONCE while NOT populating with tags that I use all the freaking time. FOR EXAMPLE: since I also tag all my Homestuck stuff with "homestuck," I was happy when it came up as my top hit for when I typed "ho," but then after a while it started coming up with "homumado" whenever I typed those two letters instead, and when I was puzzled to what that even referred to and did a dedicated search on my Tumblr, it turned out that I'd used "homumado" literally only THREE times, as a shorthand way to refer to homura x madoka, a Madoka Magica pairing I like. I ended up having to remove those tags from the old posts just because it annoyed me so much how "homumado" showed up before "homestuck" EVERY TIME even though it's not even alphabetically before that!

So Annoying!!!

from the beginning, tumblr memorizes tags, but it has a limit to how many it memorizes. Hence, if you tag very basically you're golden, but if you're like me and you like to keep your rambling asides to tags, then it remembers that one misspelled sentence you tagged with three years ago, but NOT the characters name from the new fandom that you post in all the time now. Pain. in. the. ass.
