Agreed. The general decorum of Tumblr is part of why I struggle to participate over there... When did they all collectively decide to stop using grammar and punctuation? When did it become more fun to post an overused "reaction gif" in lieu of genuine comments, criticism, and conversation?

I think I just have to accept the fact that Tumblr is a language I just don't speak.

I agree that the lack of proper grammar and punctuation are annoying, but I do understand why people use reaction gifs. It's something you do when you don't have the time for or don't want to make a proper comment. It's the online equivalent to laughing or smiling or rolling your eyes in a real life conversation. You don't always reply with a long comment. Sometimes you just smile, laugh, drop a sassy one-liner, things like that. And on tumblr you use gifs for that because people can't see you smiling or rolling your eyes.

I think people are more apt to post reaction gifs on tumblr rather than genuine comments and conversation is because tumblr is a really terrible way to carry on conversation. It's unfortunate that there's no real commenting system on tumblr, but perhaps the reason for that is to promote the simplicity of just... sharing images and posts and not talking about it. Which is what tumblr is for I guess.

Yeah this. Which is why I'm not interested in using the site. No one to talk to, nothing to talk about.

Well goodness me, you've put it beautifully.

Every once in a while, I forget and reply to someone with more than three sentences and become annoyed when they don't reply, even though what did I expect? I walked into Yakko, Wakko, and Dot's bedroom after they've split a case of RockStar energy drink and said "sit down so I can explain how to turn a decimal into a percent". It's my own damn fault.

It's, as they say, the nature of the beast. Tumblr isn't meant for words and thought the way Dreamwidth and the other journaling sites are- it's about micro-second, ten second attention span, freebasing pixie stix dissolved in Redbull posting. There's only time for a picture.

I know I shouldn't be annoyed by the tumbleweeds acting as they've been programmed, but I agree with the sentiments of "there's no way to have a decent conversation".
