I was just thinking earlier today, the problem with the whole "Do unto others" thing is that it really only works if you actually want to be treated the same way other people want to be treated. That's not always the case, unfortunately.

That's why I prefer Rousseau's maxim: do good to yourself with as little evil as possible to others. It doesn't presume that one's preferred treatment is the preferred treatment of all.
