It's not the concept that annoys me so much as it seems to also be shorthand for "Always OOC, and the author's a trendwhore who can't write lust or romance for crap and so handwaves it with *magic lust*"

+1 to ALWAYS OOC

YAY OOC

Author's notes: I have to come up with an actual plot that gives a good reason why these characters would end up together? Screw that. It's biology, I ain't got to explain shit.

This. For the same reason I hate sex pollen, fuck-or-die, aliens-made-them-do-it and all those other scenarios that are just a cheap excuse to get two characters to fuck without actually thinking about HOW they'd end up in bed together.

I agree with you on the fuck-or-die, aliens-made-them-do-it, biological-imperative side, but I have literally never seen a sex pollen fic that doesn't address the consent issue. It's strange.

I actually wrote a sex-pollen fic a few months ago with the express purpose of tackling the consent issues. It was kind of an interesting experience, but then, I sort of enjoy exploring consent and how it works in general.

I remember a sex-pollen fic in which the two characters didn't end up fucking exactly because neither could consent. They both wanted it before the pollen incident, but hadn't broached with the other so when the pollen hit it was a lot of angsty denial of desire for both.

As you say... it's weird but most sex pollen fics do deal with consent... One would think it was a 'get out of jail' card for it..

I have see one. ONE.

This is it: http://archiveofourown.org/works/448149

I have seen one, too. But it was humour and the characters didn't even noticed that they were fucking.

But that explicitly deals with consent, which is exactly what the OP was saying.

Actually I'd go more with Phil being the most epic asshole in the history of assholes for taking away Clint's ability to masturbate in that condition, though, which is pretty dub-con in my mind.

That sounds about right.
