Nah, I never got that into the series either. I enjoyed watching it but I definitely don't feel the same depth of affection that others do for the show. I just couldn't really get into it, there was always something to throw me out of an episode. Also, at a certain point, the parallels between the series and the classic Western really started to become a negative in the series for me and that started to bother me a whole lot. So between those two things, I don't know, I could take it or leave it.

In any case: I don't think there's ever a case where you should feel that a single element of something is so central or canonical to be a fan of something. Certainly it's not the case for science fiction, disliking one TV show that ran for 13 episodes isn't going to make you "not a fan". Just don't sweat it.
