Nah, a lot of people dislike Firefly--it got cancelled, remember?

That said, one episode isn't a great sample size for any show...but based on the complaints you have, you probably won't like the rest of it either. :/

I like Firefly, but I often feel like it looms larger in the minds of its fans than its overall quality merits.

Insofar as feeling like you're the only SF fan not to like something that everybody else likes — that's exactly how I feel about [RECENT SACRED SCI-FI COW REDACTED], so... I can relate, anon.

Did you watch the actual pilot or the episode FOX aired first? Honestly though, it's 13 episodes and a movie. Just watch it so you can at least get the references.

I liked Firefly for what it was, but in the end, after hearing various things about what Joss was planning to do with the show, I'm glad it ended where it did.

(Dollhouse, however, I wish had had more time to really unfold at a reasonable pace.)

Some people just don't like some things, it's okay and doesn't make you a bad fan. However, I would suggest trying to watch a few more episodes. Some of my favourite shows have rather mediocre pilots that made me wonder if I'd watch more than a few episodes, and then I got sucked in and loved the show. Firefly is one of them. I usually skip the pilot on rewatches because I don't like it, but I LOVE the show. So don't give up on it just yet if you generally like sci-fi.

You like what you like, and don't like what you don't like; if you like sci-fi bar "Firefly," then you're a sci-fi fan.

I happen to be a huge fan of the show, but I don't base my friendships with people on whether they know what I mean when I call something shiny. LOL Just tell your friends it didn't float your boat and redirect the convo to a sci-fi fandom you do share with them.

I think it's funny that it's this huge sin as a sci-fi fan to say "I liked Firefly but I'm honestly over the fact that it got cancelled." Which is where I stand. I enjoyed it but haven't even watched any of it more than once, I thought Serenity was kinda terrible, and I agree that sometimes Whedon's humor feels too forced.

I will add to the chorus that maybe you need to watch a few more episodes, one episode is not always enough to get a real sense of a series (in fact it rarely is.) I'm not saying you'll love it, but maybe it'll be worth trying since your friends are so into Firefly.

Not everyone is going to love Firefly, it is a cult series, it's just that it was an extremely well done one. I think for Joss Whedon it was his tightest work to date (I'm not talking personal favorites, I'm talking about strength in writing because Buffy/Angel/and Dollhouse all had more "rough" episodes right out of the gate despite how much I love them.)

Noooo! I get a lot of stick off my boyfriend and friends for not liking Firefly, but it just bores the hell out of me and the characters do nothing to inspire any of my sympathies. I'd say give it another episode just to be sure, but yeah. If you end up not liking it you are most certainly not alone.

The mentality of "YOU ARE NOT A TRUE FAN OF THIS GENRE UNLESS YOU LIKE THIS" is such bullshit. Do you like sci-fi? Then you're a true sci-fi fan, regardless of what you think of this one show that happens to be sci-fi.

(I know this secret is about Firefly, but the above also applies to Star Wars and Star Trek.)

Maybe they'll be fine with you not caring about it OP, a bit disappointed but eh.

Though I guess that may also depend on whether they are rabid Whedon fans or not who think he can do no wrong. Thankfully I think those kind of breed of fan aren't that numerous- just loud, but yeah.

With Firefly I thought it was well made anyway. Personally I think the only thing I love in it is that toy dinosaur scene everyone posted all the time for a while though. Overall, like Avengers though I kind of.. can see why people love it but also never truly feel emersed myself- like I can see the strings and never lose myself in the story or truly believe it is happening. It all feels so artificial sometimes to me. Some great moments still to name and even some genuinely funny parts- but 90% of the time I am fully aware this is just a film/ tv show/whatever. I can't bring myself to fully care because I see actors and sets not real people or places as I watch.

Of course a part of this might be hype failure but IDK, I'm kind of jealous that so many other people can lose themselves to these stories, sob as Whedon once again, kills their favourite and I just can't. I mean yeah he's problematic sometimes but still, like I said I can pretty much see why people like his stuff on a certain level even if I kind of can't.

For whatever reason Whedon's stuff just doesn't resonate with me on a deep level. And I have no idea why.

I had a really hard time getting through the first episode, too. The first few actually. It was really difficult to follow along. Your friends not answering your questions is probably a large part of your distaste. I would say either go online to find your answers, or just push through and keep watching it to see if it grows on you. I was super frustrated and not at all engaged when I watched the pilot for the first time. Once I got a few episodes into it, I really, really loved it.

And if you still don't like it after a few episodes, no worries. You don't HAVE to like it. It's not that big a deal, really, but everyone makes it out ot be one because it only had one season and therefore didn't have the chance to deteriorate like most long-running shows.

Hey OP, I didn't like the first episode either. I watched Firefly twice, both times with a handful of buddies, and I didn't like the first couple of episodes for either marathon. However, everyone were all laughing our heads off by episode six and we all enjoyed the rest of the series.

We didn't have any alcohol or pot or anything, just a bunch of dudes with pop and chips. It was a rather relaxed atmosphere, no expectations or pressure to 'like' the series. So go get a buddy, a friend who hasn't seen it either, and watch it together. Even if you don't like it, you'll be able to understand the references and tell your Firefly-crazy friends why it didn't work for you.

You're not letting anyone down, life's too short for you to spend time watching a tv show you don't like if you don't want to, and honestly, all the references are easy enough to understand through fandom osmosis. You don't really need to watch every episode to get the full context of "I'll be in my bunk"; it's not actually worth it.

So, you know. Relax.

And on the humor- personally speaking, I wouldn't say it's forced- so much as... uh- I think just really incredibly dry humor, going between dead-pan and sarcasm. Which, yeah, not everyone's going to enjoy that. *shrugs*

While Firefly is one of my favorites, I feel this way about Doctor Who, so I get it, OP. You like what you like and that's that.

Maybe give it one more episode, but you shouldn't have to force yourself to watch something just to fit someone else's idea of what makes a real fan.

I'm confused about 'couldn't tell what was going on'. Either you were way distracted or you watched some random ep in the middle, because they're not exactly rocket science.

I'd double-check and see if you actually saw the *real* pilot, and if you didn't, watch that. If you did and still don't like, well, that's that.

I had the same problem when I first tried to watch it. I forced myself through the whole thing thinking it would get better but I never really liked them. It wasn't until my second viewing that I fell in love. I don't know why, but suddenly the characters and humor and setting just clicked and I loved it all.

If you don't want to watch it don't, but if you do feel like giving it another try I suggest going for it. Also, watch with your friends. Watching movies or shows with my friends who enjoy those movies/shows is very nearly a guarantee that I'll enjoy them more than by myself.

Sometimes things just don't appeal, even though you think they should. Sometimes it seems to me that it's not the big blatant obvious things that appeal to us, but the small, subtle, hard to define nuances. Best not try to force it. If the character dynamics and the situations just don't rub you right, they wont. Maybe there's another show you can connect to your friend with.
