I love Firefly. But a) I can get why people wouldn't dig it and b) I understand that not everyone is going to like what I like.

Oh, additionally: I dislike Heinlein. This makes me a bad sci-fi fan in the eyes of a number of people I've encountered, despite the fact that I love Asimov and Bradbury.

My feeling is, if you dig shit that's sci-fi, then you're a sci-fi fan. No one is going to like every permutation of a genre, and the expectation that a) one should like every permutation or b) that one should like certain permutations is borne of either elitism or self-consciousness. In other words, it's not to be taken seriously.

Like what you like, and fuck those who would tell you that you're "doing it wrong."

I have issues with Heinlein myself. Like, for example, I love Stranger in a Strange Land until we get to the end where instead of drawing out his cosmology to the obvious conclusion, Heinlein falls all over himself to assure the audience that no gayness is going on here, no siree, all this magical sex is happening between the heteros. :(

I think even a lot of fairly committed Heinlein fans have some level of reservation about the man's later work, so you're not alone there.

That bit I can at least partially attribute to the time period. I think it's possible to say, "this attitude is wrong" while also acknowledging that it's understandable that one would have said attitude given the circumstances.

My beef with Heinlein has more to do with his arrogance and his tendency to preach. He has IDEAS about THINGS and these ideas are CORRECT and he needs to show people just how correct they are.

A person can write speculative fiction without coming across like he or she has figured out all of the answers. Heinlein was not such a person.

LOL

I know exactly what you mean about the preachiness. I had a friend in undergrad who was convinced that he was a conflation of Michael and Paul Atreides. Yes, his Messiah complex was super attractive.
