I love Firefly to pieces, OP but it's definitely not for everyone and despite it being one of my all-time favorite shows, I do think it's a bit over-hyped. I also think your friends were incredibly rude not to answer your questions about the show going in so you'd know more of what to expect. Maybe if you knew more about the show, you would've liked it more. That being said, if you like sci-fi, you like sci-fi. You don't have to like EVERY SINGLE sci-fi series in order to be a fan of the genre. In fact, I imagine almost every fan has at least one popular/semi-popular sci-fi series they don't care for.
