I definitely liked Firefly, but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would, for various reasons. That being said, the characters are easier to like if you watch past the first episode.

I know a lot of people disagree with me, but IMO the first episode of a show is usually a terrible way to get to know a cast of characters and a show's general tone and setting (this is why I always watch some random well-liked episode before watching a show's pilot -- even if it's heavily arc-based and I have no idea what's going on half the time, I still usually get a sense of the show far better than with the pilot. And I can always go back to the pilot afterwards and watch it in order to figure out the parts I didn't understand).

I agree about the first episode of a show not being the best way to judge the show's characters and tone. I generally try to give shows 3-4 episodes to get a feel for them.

Aw man, this is why I don't try to get my friends into series anymore. Because after you've invested yourself in a season or three and you can't quite hold back your love for this show and its characters, there are few things as awkward as sitting down with your friends to watch the first episode. "No, no, it...it like totally gets good. Like these characters...you wouldn't even believe."

It's also why my friends and I start newbies out on the paintball episode of Community.

Any show takes a few episodes for things to click and characters/relationships to settle.
