Did you watch the actual pilot or the episode FOX aired first? Honestly though, it's 13 episodes and a movie. Just watch it so you can at least get the references.

This. Firefly is one of those things you should simply watch so you can finally get all the references. I found Mean Girls boring as fuck, but I'm so glad I watched it because the internet suddenly makes so much more sense to me.

And, frankly, nothing's more embarrassing than people saying things like "I'll be in my bunk" and not knowing what they're talking about.

I agree. I really like Firefly, but there are plenty of movies/TV series I don't like. If someone suggested watching all of a series just so I'd get the pop culture references, I'd think they were bonkers.

OP, you didn't enjoy it - don't worry about it. It's a TV show, that's all, and there are eleventy billion TV shows out.

Also, there's Know Your Meme and also, the entire internet, if someone is baffled by a reference that they feel they should know but don't.

I mean, hell, I googled "I'll be in my bunk" and not only did I find it has it's own TV Tropes page, there's also the more concise (if possibly somewhat incorrect) Urban Dictionary definition as well as the fact that the wikipedia page for the Firefly episode in question shows up as the third fucking hit if you google it. Hell, those were the top one, two, and three hits respectively.

I watch what I want to watch. I read what I want to read. I google all the rest. IT IS NOT REALLY THAT HARD TO STAY IN THE KNOW.

I've watched Firefly a couple times, and have no idea why "I'll be in my bunk!" is so associated with the show. I saw it come up in some bloopers, but I'm not sure I remember it ever appearing in the actual show itself (and like others have said, it's hardly a phrase that originated with Firefly).

I'd hope that someone would watch more than a single episode before deciding they can't stand a show—in my experience, one episode isn't usually enough for me to get a feel of what it's like—but having to watch THE WHOLE DAMN THING whether or not you like it? What the hell?

I love Firefly, but come on. If they don't like it, they don't need to watch it. They'll be just fine with google and wiki searches.

Yes! This was my comment. If you watched "The Train Job" first, I can understand why you'd be confused; the two hour pilot "Serenity" was supposed to be the first episode, and the confusion disappears if you watch it first.
