This isn't cultural education. It's a fucking scifi show referenced in certain niche's.

That is not a culture no matter how much some nerds desperately want it to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen it used in board games and references on television. I think it counts as "minor pop culture" if nothing else.

Pop culture and culture are very different.

Star Wars is culture. Like it or not, it's famous. Gone with the Wind is culture.

Firefly, though I do love it, is at best a cult hit that is relatively unknown and not all that popular.

Nobody is going to open a history book 30 years from now and see "I'll be in my bunk" talked about. This is not necessary cultural research and suggesting to OP otherwise is arrogance at best.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy you have feelings about this don't you.

Well, insanenoodleguy is pretty emotional for a troll.

COULD IT BE WE ARE SEEING THE REAL INSANENOODLEGUY?

I guess completely rational negative feelings about Firefly are not as acceptable as over-the-top irrational positive feelings about Firefly.

/Pop culture and culture are very different./

Not on the internet it isn't.

For frame of reference, how many times have you heard any line from GWTW quoted online? Even the highly quotable famous line?

Even offline, compare the number of times you heard any refernce to GWTW spoken of typed anywhere to the number of times you've heard the 'I'll be in my bunk' online.

I'd also argue that Starwars is pop culture and is of no greater significance culturally than any other highly quoted geek phenominon but you've either got a bee in you're bonnet about this, or you're arguing for the sake of it, and I have no time for either of those today.

Ooo, one last thing, How do you know what's going to be quoted on 30 years time? People (well not people, studio execs) didn't think 'That's no moon' would still be being referenced in 40 years time. Time will tell.

I don't know, "I'll be in my bunk" may become regular parlance without Firefly ever being more than the cult hit you say. Never underestimate the power of the internet to spread memes, and the possibility of most people not knowing where it's from, even with sites like "Know Your Meme" and Urban Dictionary.

why does that still necessitate watching an entire television series though

you don't need to do serious research into the 19th century fad for incorrectly spelled acronyms to be allowed to use the word "OK"

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Firefly and still find myself seconding this. This sort of thing is why non-Firefly fans hate Firefly fans.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody suggest that every single person in the world should know about this. But if you are a fan of a certain genre, and OP said they're a sci-fi fan, it usually pays off to know the classics of that genre so you understand the references. And most sci-fi fans consider Firefly a classic of the genre.

This is not about some elitist OMFG CULTURAL EDUCATION thing. This is about knowing what people in certain subcultures talk about, which you might want to if you're part of that subculture.

you do not need to watch an entire series to pick up on a few meme's and in jokes.

Hell, we have secrets on here about how people do that sort of shit for things they actually claim to be in the fandom of. The difference here being OP isn't a firefly fan and doesn't claim to be one, just a scifi fan. In which case some cursory research if they are really curious is all that's necessary.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
This. Plus, as other's have mentioned, it's pretty hit or miss as to someone considering it a classic. Yes, there are groups that do [most notably fans who call themselves Brown Coats in real life], but there are also a lot of groups that hate it with a passion, and even more that don't even consider it worth a passing mention.

So, no. They really don't have to watch it for the sake of a few memes.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
This, I'm a scifi fan and I go to a scifi club. No-one has ever cared that I'm not a firefly fan. It's not that big a deal. Just because I like scifi doesn't mean I will like or watch every scifi tv show - be it a cult hit, popular or not.

It's my tastes that determine what I watch, not some kind of invisible popculture checklist

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Firefly is barely a blip on the radar of scifi or cuture.

You're just angling in another way to "OMG you gotta watch it all before you're allowed an opinion on my precious."

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
On that note, I am going on record as never having watched Dr. Who, having no interest in ever watching Dr. Who, and not giving a shit if my referring to the main character as Dr. Who instead of "the doctor" pisses people off. In fact, I'm going to refer to him as "Dr. Who" as often as possible in a blatant display of my ignorance just because I know my ignorance will piss some people off and I can laugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, doing things just to piss other people off is kind of dickish. It's just as dickish, I would say, as expecting others to like the media that one likes.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-01-07 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well now you are just being spiteful about it.

GOOD FOR YOU

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, what?

There are a lot of serious sci-fi fans who consider Firefly to be mediocre at best and barely worthy of mention. Seriously, it is not well-regarded and, in some circles, it's social suicide to admit that you like it.

The idea that it's a "classic" is absolutely ridiculous and mostly a product of Joss Whedon worship than anything else. And I'm saying this as someone who actually enjoyed it.

Twilight is culture. Just because something's crappy doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to get the references. And actually, Firefly's one of the few respected "I'm not a nerd or into scifi but I still like this," shows. It's almost like Game of Thrones for scifi (but with less blood and titties.)
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-01-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I hate to admit it, Twilight is indeed culture. So knowing something about twilight might be relevant cultural education. Doesn't mean you have to read the whole book.

But it'd make more sense to read that then it would be to watch all of firefly if we talk purely about "culture education"
chardmonster: (Default)

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-01-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I hate to say this but Twilight is immeasurably more important on a cultural level than Firefly will ever be unless it somehow becomes a new hit series.

Why? Same reasons Dark Shadows is more important culturally than That Really Thought Provoking Horror Novel You Read Once. Firefly was just never popular enough. Twilight spawned a new genre of young adult fiction and has had a possible impact on the sexuality of a hell of a lot of young women. Hell, it spawned 50 Shades.

If the OP is writing some kind of paper on early 2000s online fandoms then they should be familiar with Firefly. Otherwise a shortlived tv show that was cancelled a decade ago only requires a wikipedia article and maybe some youtube clips.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight spawned a new genre of young adult fiction

Um, no? Paranormal teen romance has existed long before Twilight entered the scene. That's like saying The Hunger Games spawned a futuristic dystopian genre for young adult fiction. All they do is making the genre popular again.

[personal profile] inkdust 2013-01-07 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact is that after Twilight, paranormal teen romance got its own section with its own sign in the bookstore. That's a little more tangible than just making something popular.
