I don't know why more people don't recommend that you first watch the MOVIE before watching any of the single episodes. I know, I know... apparently the movie is kind of disliked by a lot of established fans (I'm not entirely sure about this, but that's the vibe I get because it's almost never discussed and when it is, it's usually in a context where people are discussing its flaws).

But damn. The movie is GOOD. Kind of ESPECIALLY if you are new to the series and don't know the characters. It's a great introduction to all of them, even if it does end up telling more of the end of the story than the beginning. I really really liked it, in any case. It's self contained and makes a real effort to be accessible by non-fans. If you're somehow willing to give the series one more shot for the sake of your friends, OP, I'd recommend you forget about all the episodes and go straight to the movie. It's fun and has high production values and lets you know the POINT of all these beloved characters. It's kind of wonderful.
