Part of the problem might be that you like sci fi, and Firefly, just as it stands as series, only counts as sci fi by the flimsiest of standards (and I love the show, but the "science fiction" elements were the least developed of all), and your friends were being pretty shitty by not answering any of your questions.

it has rocket ships and laser guns. ergo, it's sci-fi

(not hard science fiction, certainly, and it's referencing westerns at least as much if not more than science fiction tropes, but it's still definitely science fiction. the lack of plausible extrapolative scientific concepts doesn't make something un-science fiction)

I consider it sci fi for people who don't like sci fi myself. Sci Fi lite even.
