I can’t actually imagine liking everything in any genre – there are too many things that would fit and so many variations. Rest assured, you can dislike a specific show/book/movie/comic and still count yourself as a fan of the genre if you generally enjoy things in that genre. Also, it’s fairly rare for something to fit just one category. I mean for Firefly, there’s the cowboy/western elements, the comedic elements, the dramatic elements, the horror elements, the caper elements, and so on. I like it and I like the mishmash of things going on, but I can see how someone might find it off-putting, especially if they didn’t like any of the characters. You gave it a chance (which you were under no obligation to do) and you didn’t like it. Unfortunately, that might leave you in a bit of a bad place because sometimes people can take it personally when you don’t like something that they do. It can be a knee-jerk reaction - I immediately thought about suggesting you watch another couple of episodes, but then I realized how that could come across. I think there’s a part of me that feels like I’m being judged by everyone who dislikes something that I like. Obviously, there are people out there who will judge, but a lot of people just don’t care and have a live and let live (a dislike and let like?) philosophy.
