You claim to be a fan of sci-fi...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So tell me, which sci-fi shows have you seen a single (early) episode of and loved? Next Gen? B5? Farscape? I had to be physically held down to get through the first season of B5, and the first couple episodes of Farscape (one of my favourite shows of all time) were truly horrible. Battlestar's introductory mini-series didn't stand alone at all. Stargate couldn't decide if it wanted to continue movie canon or not until midway through second season. And then there's Lost.

Why did you think Firefly was going to be the exception to the rule?

Oh, this is a good comment and you should feel good.

Ohhhhh I get shudders at the memory of season 1 of Star Trek TNG.

Yes, yes, yes.

TNG is the Trek of my childhood, and I can't imagine the circumstances that would induce me to sit down and watch it from start to finish ever again. In the past two years we've rewatched Voyager and DS9 with my daughter, but the thought of slogging through the likes of "Angel One" for eleventy million seasons is too much for me. LOL

Uuugh, TNG season 1.

(I actually kind of love The Naked Now, but that one's an anomaly in the season.)

HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE THIS THING

IT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE LAZY THAT YOU DON'T LIKE THIS SHORTLIVED NICHE SHOW

HOW DARE YOU CALL YOURSELF A "SCIFI FAN"

You sound like a shitty person to watch new shows with.

You didn't catch the tone of the post I replied to?

They sound like one of those people who define themselves by what they're fans of. You know, shallow assholes. "If you don't like this you didn't try hard enough."

Re: You claim to be a fan of sci-fi...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no.

More like "if you didn't like this, it could be because you're judging it based solely on the pilot episode. Which, as you probably know from other sci-fi shows you've watched, is generally an unreliable way of judging the quality of sci-fi shows."

Nope, didn't get that impression at all. Then, I agree with ayrt wrt sci-fi and fantasy. Good genre, especially genre-buster genre, needs time to get its footing and establish its voice.

Eh, the tone of the post was a little off (especially the title) but the message came through pretty clearly as "almost all televised sci-fi has a rough start, this isn't any different".

I think you're just misreading this one, chard.

You're kind of a douche to people. It's hard to not notice that.

nayrt

You seem to be suffering from a failure in basic reading comprehension. The ayrt didn't say anything remotely of the sort. There's a BIG difference between "omg you're a bad sci-fi fan because you didn't bother to watch more if this show" and "well, most sci-fi shows start out crappy and then get better, so maybe Firefly is the same and you might start enjoying if you kept watching."

HDU the beginning of Battlestar was flawless... and actually the first episode of Lost is almost universally lauded.

I've been rewatching TNG and oh god, the first season is so bad. Amusing and with some good seeds for later stuff, but... yeeeah. I am also really glad they decided to drop having the Ferenghi be the ultimate bad and switched over to the Borg instead.

Oh, man, BSG. I saw way past the Hugo-winning episode (which everyone said I should totally watch), and I just could not get into the doom and gloom of the entire series. That's another show with REALLY HARDCORE FANS THAT ARE REALLY CREEPY ABOUT THEIR LOVE OF THE SHOW.

I had to be physically held down to get through the first season of B5

...*frowns*

Nah, I kid. I absolutely adored it from episode 1, but I've been told that my favorite shows are "boring", so, eh...

Re: You claim to be a fan of sci-fi...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this is so true. So many sci-fi shows I love started off as "something I watch in the background while I do other things."

This is also why I get sad when things get cancelled within a season, you never know how epic something could end up being.

Re: You claim to be a fan of sci-fi...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like a poser. I enjoyed shows like Farscape and DS9 and Stargate in their first seasons, and that's why I continued watching them. I'm not going to force myself to sit through something I don't find enjoyable or entertaining juts to gain some sort of nerd-cred, and that doesn'tmake meor anyone else less of a sci-fi fan.

Re: You claim to be a fan of sci-fi...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I have way better things to be doing than suffering through entire seasons of shows in the hope something sticks.

+ 1.

Why bother with something which just isn't enjoyable? I can get watching a few episodes maybe to get a feel for it but if after those first few it's just not any good for me there is no point in continuing.

I can imagine Star Wars being 'assigned' on some level actually (though if you watch the episode 4 movie and don't like it, you don't have to continue even then)- but Firefly? Pfft.

Power to the people who love it, rock on, it's a good use of their relaxation time- it isn't to those who dislike it because Firefly just isn't that important to begin with.

I don't actually like any scifi tv shows. I love books and movies, but no tv shows. There's been a few times I've seen a premise that sounds interesting and I try to get into it, but then I can't?

Although someone up above mentioned Dollhouse and I enjoyed Season 1 well enough. Wouldn't call myself a fan of it though.
