Vaguely related, but I'm kind of glad Firefly only got one season. I don't feel like it ended in a good place or whatever, I'm just glad that Whedon didn't get to keep it going. Like, his stuff is great and all, but it seems like everything he does - Dr. Horrible, Buffy, Avengers - exists to kick the crap out of the main character. After a while, I realized that most people would likely die, and probably for no good reason (see: Buffy's mom, Wash) except to further the torment of the main character(s).

I think I largely realized this when I read a really long Buffy fanfic that, while it wasn't very good, made me care about the characters more because there was some question about whether they would die, not just, "Would this make Buffy feel bad? Yes? See you."
