I can relate, I just can't get into Tumblr at all. I feel like such an OAP, with everyone going on about how wonderful this new technology is, and I'm sitting in my rocking chair grumbling about how it was so much better in my day (back in the good ol' LJ days). Tumblr is too much about just posting pictures, it seems so impractical to hold actual conversations there, which is what I joined fandom for.

It *is* impractical, and I'll never understand the people who argue that it's ~not hard~ to hold conversations there, when it's obvious that's not the kind of interaction tumblr was made for.

I think you mean 'grumblr'.

*fleeees*

AYRT

I thought about making that joke, but I didn't want to fumblr it.

It's not what the site was made for, but the difficulty of holding conversations is pretty variable, IMO. Two, three, four people and it isn't annoying at all, but the aggravation factor increases exponentially as more commenters get involved.

Holding conversations on Tumblr isn't actually *hard* if it's only between two people. It's when you're trying to hold a three or more way conversation that things go to hell.

And when you're sifting through a user's posts and you read the start of the same discussion every time there's a new post and it nests until there's basically one word per line...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen threads that nested so far

1) there was less than one word per line,
li
ke
t
hi
s.

2) I could only barely read them on my phone because the posts were so far to the right they didn't show up on the phone's display (unless I horizontal-scrolled for ages).

Holding conversations is a bit hard if you have an art blog or anything moderately..."professional" if that's even the right word. But especially with art. I'm bad enough at reblogging silly things, but a conversation is just one post reblogged over and over again. LJ and Dreamwidth are much nicer conversation formats--threads and everyone join in and everything (because yeah, it's pretty easy to miss a conversation moment on tumblr if there's a bunch of reblogs or even just a few).

I liked Gail Simone's point of how it's designed to more or less be a positive place--sharing or liking is pretty much all you can do.

No, you're absolutely right about that. It's not ideal for real conversations at all - it's ideal only for sharing ~pretty. I'm there a lot now exactly because everyone I know is there, but for the LONGEST time I just couldn't figure out what to DO with it. So now I just reblog things that I find interesting. Some people I know are way into talking to their followers, but I could not care less if I have them. It's just a record of cool stuff for myself, really. :P

+1 exactly what I use Tumblr for too as well as signal boosting stuff that's important to me.

+2

I use tumblr as an archive of pretty fanart and funny gifs. That's all it's good for.
