Nope, you got it. The interface is really bad, the search function will never work and there's no way to have a discussion outside of private messages, so if you aren't RIGHT THERE when something is happening you are going to miss out.

Surrender anyway. It's worth it!

I can relate, I just can't get into Tumblr at all. I feel like such an OAP, with everyone going on about how wonderful this new technology is, and I'm sitting in my rocking chair grumbling about how it was so much better in my day (back in the good ol' LJ days). Tumblr is too much about just posting pictures, it seems so impractical to hold actual conversations there, which is what I joined fandom for.

That said, it sounds like something about tumblr doesn't make sense to you, so you might be better off fiddling with a dummy account to figure things out, [Also, tumblr? Not actually a good medium for conversation, so I wouldn't hold my breath to really start talking to people on it.]

I don't understand people who complain about Tumblr being too confusing. It's not the easiest website to understand, but I don't think it's any less intuitive then most other fandom sites. I've still haven't figured out what half the stuff on LJ is supposed to do or how it works, but I can figure out Tumblr just fine.

I feel your pain, anon. Just cannot get to grips with the place at all.

Mind you, I probably said the same thing about yahoogroups, when fandom moved from the alt.* newsgroups. And about Fanfiction.net. And about LJ.

And I'll probably say it about whatever comes after Tumblr, even though right now I hope whatever it is gets a move on and takes over.

Predicting this thread turns into another "everyone on tumblr is illiterate, 12 years old, and brain damaged, obviously" hatefest, SIGH.

I didn't get tumblr for the longest time. Then one day it just clicked. I don't use it to talk to people, but if you already have friends on it you're halfway there (even if it really does suck for those purposes). I think people make it work through a combination of asks, tagging each other in posts, and communicating using twitter and email.

That said, I find the attitude among younger fans that one should be on tumblr 24/7 kind of baffling too (ie. "I'm going to the store, be back in 30 minutes."). Is this a chat room? What?

MTE anon, every time I've tried to understand how to communicate in Tumblr I've failed. I keep thinking I must be missing a really obvious link to The Page That Makes It Interactive, but all I can find so far is people copying other peoples posts.

Tumblr is confusing to me too and I can't even begin to keep up with the tags (or even my own dashboard), but it's where fandom has moved so...if you want to be involved in fandom it seems 'the place to be'.

Tumblr isn't for everyone, though. If you're feeling a lot of frustration over your account maybe you should lurk instead? I lurked for a long time tbh, and sometimes I think that was best.

Strangely, tumblr is the first place where I've been able to interact with fandom in a meaningful way. I couldn't get noticed on LJ, but tumblr, its been easy. I have conversations via a mix of asks, tags, replies, reblogs, and like anywhere -- email.

I'm very selective about how many people I follow though.

Yeah, I miss when my fandom was livelier via various journal sites too, but I don't have the time, energy or inclination to make yet another move. Getting older, more demands on my time, fanwork taking up less of my life and all. I've pretty much accepted that fandom's moving on without me, and it's not a one-sided parting either. I'm still on AO3 and DW so if someone wants to find my stuff, they can, but ye ravening hordes and I have had our run.

Tumblr is pretty much the worst excuse for a content delivery platform ever.

The fact that the images stop working periodically is probably at least partially on my ISP (oh, how I wish I could afford to change...), but everything else is on them.

I pretty much feel the same.

To me it isn't intuitive at all, and have trouble finding even basic stuff. I find t absolutely horrible to interact with people in any meaningful way, and it's basically a place where I feel I'm bombarded with thousands of images but can't find what I want to find.

I really think the size of the fandom depends on how enjoyable and useful your fandom experience is. If your main fandom and main pairing is tiny and tumblr based(like Community, Troy/Abed) you can get some good discussion out of it because you know everyone. It's not IDEAL, but when supplemented with emails to closer friends and visits to fandom anon memes/multi fandom lj blogs it's a decent experience.

I would rather my fandom were more on lj too, but yeah that era is coming to an end for non-behemoth fandoms :P

I like tumbler because it's easy to find content for a fandom without having to join communities and such. For discussion, I go to a discussion board (those still exist).
