(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I didn't get tumblr for the longest time. Then one day it just clicked. I don't use it to talk to people, but if you already have friends on it you're halfway there (even if it really does suck for those purposes). I think people make it work through a combination of asks, tagging each other in posts, and communicating using twitter and email.
That said, I find the attitude among younger fans that one should be on tumblr 24/7 kind of baffling too (ie. "I'm going to the store, be back in 30 minutes."). Is this a chat room? What?

I find that strange, too, but I suppose with any site you'll get the people who never log off.
Also, yeah, the majority of the people I connect with on Tumblr have their actual conversations in a chat room or though Skype or something. I find it's actually a great place to meet people, though.

What strikes me as interesting is that 'Following/Unfollowing' and the drama that sometimes comes with it reminds me so much of the days of LJ where 'Friending/Unfriending' was A Pretty Big Deal. The more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess
Also yeah, I'll admit the 24/7 thing baffles me too, but I sometimes forget that Tumblr does have a queue option, so that could be part of it too.

...Mm, that's an interesting point. I always felt it to be a more interactive Twitter feed.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 01:13 am (UTC)(link)I've seen that in places on LJ/DW, too. RP communities seem especially prone to it, for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 04:11 am (UTC)(link)The more I think about it, the more I realise that people aren't posting that because they actually think someone will be looking for them in the next 30 minutes, but just because they (unlike 99% of the people ITT) feel tumblr is an effective communication tool and they just want to be heard.
