Predicting this thread turns into another "everyone on tumblr is illiterate, 12 years old, and brain damaged, obviously" hatefest, SIGH.

I didn't get tumblr for the longest time. Then one day it just clicked. I don't use it to talk to people, but if you already have friends on it you're halfway there (even if it really does suck for those purposes). I think people make it work through a combination of asks, tagging each other in posts, and communicating using twitter and email.

That said, I find the attitude among younger fans that one should be on tumblr 24/7 kind of baffling too (ie. "I'm going to the store, be back in 30 minutes."). Is this a chat room? What?

I find that strange, too, but I suppose with any site you'll get the people who never log off.
Also, yeah, the majority of the people I connect with on Tumblr have their actual conversations in a chat room or though Skype or something. I find it's actually a great place to meet people, though.

Yeah, it took me a bit before I "got" Tumblr, too. Tracking tags, finding the right blogs to follow (outside of friends), et all. Sure, I do miss the days of LJ sometimes, not gonna lie.

What strikes me as interesting is that 'Following/Unfollowing' and the drama that sometimes comes with it reminds me so much of the days of LJ where 'Friending/Unfriending' was A Pretty Big Deal. The more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess

Also yeah, I'll admit the 24/7 thing baffles me too, but I sometimes forget that Tumblr does have a queue option, so that could be part of it too.

Is this a chat room? What?

...Mm, that's an interesting point. I always felt it to be a more interactive Twitter feed.

Eh, it seems like it's going more the 'Tumblr's interface is crap at userfriendly-ness' and 'It's not meant to have conversations on'.

+1

Yup, that's the way I feel about it. I'm actually more interested in engaging in conversations than looking at pretty pics, so Tumblr is not for me, apparently.

Yes I'm actually relieved! Today's discussion was interesting and brought up lots of valid criticisms. Yesterday's was just condescending language policing, and annoyingly generalized besides. Whatever its faults, tumblr is not forcing you to follow the 14 year old Doctor Who fans.

I've seen that in places on LJ/DW, too. RP communities seem especially prone to it, for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense for RP journals, but honestly I find the vast majority of RP journals to be really awkward and weird. So why people want to replicate that "I'm performing my life via the internet!" effect on their personal blogs beats me.
The more I think about it, the more I realise that people aren't posting that because they actually think someone will be looking for them in the next 30 minutes, but just because they (unlike 99% of the people ITT) feel tumblr is an effective communication tool and they just want to be heard.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the tumblr fans are protraying themselves in exactly that light by their silly, overwrought reactions to something the OP didn't even say, *SIGH*.

their ass is sore because they're afraid of being judged as children.

so, they react...like children!
