Strangely, tumblr is the first place where I've been able to interact with fandom in a meaningful way. I couldn't get noticed on LJ, but tumblr, its been easy. I have conversations via a mix of asks, tags, replies, reblogs, and like anywhere -- email.

I'm very selective about how many people I follow though.

Seriously. Tons of fandoms that have been dead for months/years on LJ are alive and kicking there, and I'm loving it.

People who 'don't get' tumblr or think it's ~impossible~ to have meaningful conversations there are Doing It Wrong. Tag your shit and it's just like LJ people, except easier to find people who like the same stuff you do.

Until tumblr creates a way to have threaded conversations attached to specific posts, it is not just like LJ. Now if you don't care about that, fine. But a lot of people do. It would, for example, be nearly impossible to have the kind of discussion we're having right here right now and keep track of what everyone's talking about if it was being done on tumblr.

No, we are not "doing it wrong" and it is not 'just like LJ'. You love it, fine. Many don't, and for perfectly good and valid reasons.

Same. I always felt like I was kind of forcing myself into conversations and whatnot on LJ. Tumblr has been so much easier because I can say/make/write things and just kind of put them out there, and if people want to respond, they can. That's a lot more comfortable for me. I've made a lot more friends in my ~2 years on Tumblr than I have in the 9 years I've had my LJ. Took me a bit to get the hang of it (and I'm "old" by Tumblr standards, too) but now it's no big deal.

It's different from LJ, yeah. But it's definitely not impossible to have good fandom discussions.
