I really think the size of the fandom depends on how enjoyable and useful your fandom experience is. If your main fandom and main pairing is tiny and tumblr based(like Community, Troy/Abed) you can get some good discussion out of it because you know everyone. It's not IDEAL, but when supplemented with emails to closer friends and visits to fandom anon memes/multi fandom lj blogs it's a decent experience.

I would rather my fandom were more on lj too, but yeah that era is coming to an end for non-behemoth fandoms :P

I almost feel like it should be the other way around. Like giant fandoms flourish on tumblr, but smaller ones should maintain a good presence on lj or dw, just because discussion has always been a part of tiny/obscure fandom.
