Which is part of the OP's point, I believe.

You can't really dive deep into fandom or stay on top of things, including your own posts, on Tumblr. For some people, fandom is just "ooh look at the pretty pictures" and in that case, Tumblr works fine. But for a lot of other people, fandom is about interaction and discussion, so it sucks when a fandom moves over to Tumblr. Then there's no discussion or interaction because everyone is just reposting pretty pictures and not much else.

A lot of us want pretty pictures to be a part of the fandom experience, not all of it.

You find a blog you like. You click follow, usually up in the right hand corner.

That blog poster posted or reblogged something you like. You click "reblog." Write a comment about why you liked it or don't. That's basically it.

If you and your friends wanna talk...you reblog back and forth or you send messages.

Simple.

If that's all your fandom experience, well, some of us find that boring as fuck and really unsatisfying. I want more out of fandom than just clicking things.

Tumblr woks for many of us due to work or we're in a s;ump and not at all wanting to go into deep discussion. It's fast paced and that works for us.

OP can do the same damn thing and make friends who use the tools that are specifically for discussion and fic.

Except, as I mentioned, a lot of fandom has moved over to Tumblr. With smaller fandoms, the entire fandom is Tumblr-centric now, and even with the larger ones, while there is still a lot going on in LJ and DW, it's a lot quieter these days and there are less people there because everyone is over on Tumblr.

I, personally, am lucky in that most of my fandoms are large enough (and have enough older/more-old fashioned fans) that there's still plenty of activity on LJ, so I can just use Tumblr to look at pretty pictures and stuff and then come back to LJ and DW where all the interesting stuff happens. But some of my fandoms (mostly the smaller ones or those targeted to a younger audience), everything is on Tumblr, so as someone who is in fandom for fics and discussions, that means the fandom might as well just not exist. For a lot of people, all their fandoms are the smaller or younger-target ones and yet they are also here for fics and meta, so if it's all over on Tumblr, then the fandoms might as well not exist, which is, again, the problem. Not that Tumblr sucks to use or that it's absorbing fandom activity, but that it sucks to use and it's absorbing fandom activity.

That's one of the biggest reasons people don't like it though. A *lot* of people like having open discussions that can happen between multiple people who may, or may not know each other [or at least, know each other well enough to have im handles] or even just between people who are online at different times.

Seriously, I get that the complaining about tumblr can be annoying, but is it really hard to understand *why* people don't like it?

So okay, how about this scenario: Somebody posts something you find interesting. When you look at the notes you see that somebody else reblogged it and added a comment that you want to respond to. How the hell are you supposed to do that? Reblog and add a comment that won't go to the commenter? Reblog the commenter's reblog, which I assume won't go to the OP? And if four other people might have interesting things to add, I'm kind of assuming the answer is, forget about it, why would you ever want to talk to more than one person, here, have a gifset?

You click on that note, which takes you to the reblog in question. Then you reblog that post with your own comment. Not hard at all.

This isn't so bad with things with only a few hundred notes but with popular things like gif sets or fanart, you can get pages and pages of "x liked this!" and "y reblogged this from z" before you see any comments. Even if you reblogged with your own comment, others won't see it unless they click "more notes" a million times O_o

(Although I'll have to admit some things are genuinely broken, even though they could be easily fixable, such as italics/bold. I always have to go back and edit those back into my text posts, because posting somehow removes the tags along with the space after the tag. Sigh.)

Nope. I've seen others mention doing it. You DON'T go into Tumblr expecting that kind of discussion. If you do, then, quite frankly, you're rather stupid.

Stay on LJ or DW if you want discussion. Don't expect Tumblr to adhere to what YOU want.
