Wow, you guys are dumb. If you want time stamps, use this http://tumblring.net/how-to-insert-timestamps-to-tumblr/ or use Missing E.

Sure, they should have them in there to begin with, but it's not HARD to find alternatives.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't this for your own blog though? How do you see datestamps on your dashboard or on other people's blogs? Also, doesn't missing e not work for mobile browsers? I do a lot of browsing on my phone. And does missing e stop infinite scroll and make unreadable layouts readable? I should not need to add someone to my dash just to be able to read their posts because I can't read them on their tumblr.

shhh

you're gonna give otakugal a stroke if you keep implying tumblr isn't all that good

If you hover over the upper right hand corner of a post on the dash, you can get the timestamp as alt text. It also doubles as a direct link to the post. :B

Um, I only see the word reblog and like symbol there. Do I have to install a plug-in first? I've been clicking 'more notes' to find a comment I can click on and get a direct link from @_@.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the actual corner, not any of the symbols. When you hover the cursor over it, it folds down like it's been dog-eared.

What the anon above me said! Hang on let me grab a screenshot to show you.

See where the alt text is coming from? That's where you need to hover! :3

I see what you mean now. Brilliant! This may be too much to ask but is there a way for it to show actual the actual DATE and time, not just the timestamp? And is there a way to get to the source of a picture without clicking on 'a reblogged this from b' ten times?

If the post is a certain amount of time old (especially in tracked tags), it'll show either X days ago or, if it's older than a week, the actual date. If it's just posted the current day, it only shows the time.

Using the derse diplomacy tag for an example here (tag is part of an inside joke thing, long story short).

And most posts have a "source" link at the bottom left right before the tags. Most of the time, it just shows who posted it first (which is fine for things like text posts - though it won't be there if the OP deactivated or deleted their blog). However, people who source videos/fanart/news links/whatever may use the source link down there instead of putting it in the commentary. Sometimes, if you're linking from say, wikipedia or CNN, it'll change to their logo. :B

Hm, x days ago is not ideal but it's better than no date.

If the original blog is deactivated, it'll say name-deactivated and if it has been deleted it will be blank right? I've had some trouble getting to the original blog from some posts that say source is somewhere else but links to the post itself for some reason, like John reblogged this from Jane, source: caterfree10 but when I click on source: caterfree10 it goes back to John's reblogged post. There are some that gives a source to the home page of the original blog, like the source goes to caterfree10.tumblr.com but not the original post, caterfree10.tumblr.com/post/randomnumbers. Does this mean the reblogger changed the source on purpose or did something else happen that broke the source button? Is there some way to get back to caterfree10.tumblr.com/post/randomnumbers other than by clicking more notes and finding someone who didn't reblog-reblog-reblog the post from John?

You've been very helpful. Thank you very much!

Yeah, it at least gives a starting point to check the date. And some blog themes will give a straight up timestamp if it's coded right (I greatly prefer having proper timestamps on my blog myself, though lots of others simply don't care ~_~).

Exactly right on deactivated VS deleted! It's main blogs that get deactivated and sideblogs that end up deleted, fyi. :B And I've noticed the default blog theme tends to do the weird "unable to click to where the post came from" thing. :/ It's annoying, though it's one reason I never used the default theme for long and really need to change it for my diamondsandfrogs blog whoops. The differences in source link type (main blog as opposed to specific post) can vary. Sometimes, it's due to the OP wanting credit to their blog as a whole as opposed to the post itself (the latter of which is default) - it's mostly art or graphic bloggers who do this, though occasionally others will do it too. Others, it might be someone correcting a source like if someone reposted a graphic as opposed to simply reblogging (which I will never understand bc it takes WAY less time to reblog a post than it does to save the image and reupload it I MEAN REALLY 8T). And sometimes, yes, people are dicks and change the source to someone other than the OP for no reason other than they can. It's rare ime, though it definitely can happen.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I never knew that about deactivated vs deleted. Thanks! What about name changes, do they count as deleted blogs for both main blogs and side blogs? I think the source link problems I found were a mix of bad layout and dick changes.

You have been very helpful! I wish all the tumblr users here are helpful like you and not like the condescending asstwats above.

whoops, HTML fail

[personal profile] caterfree10 2013-01-11 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Name changes should also change the source if no one's changed it to something other than the default. I know I've noticed for sure that happen a few times with some of my friends who like to change their urls sometimes (oh wow that was clunky wording aslkjfhskdh). And yeaaaaaah, there are a LOT of bad layouts. There's a reason my current one took a fucking month to make sure it ran smoothly. XP and then it didn't because I can't edit the fucking text size *HEADDESK*

Yeah, sometimes it's easy for people to figure out things on their own, and sometimes people need to ask whatever specific questions they have about something to figure it out (which a lot of people who can don't often realize, I don't think), so I try to answer whatever questions someone has. My advice is often to try and mess around with things and then ask and/or raid google if something comes up. Worked for me with LJ, Tumblr, GIMP, and lots of other things so yeah. :B

Thanks again for answering my questions! I have a few more questions on renaming blogs and redirects but they aren't really important so I figured I should give you a break. Google is good when your search terms match what other people's search terms but sometimes talking to a person is much better, you know? You've been very helpful. Thanks so much!
