The Lone Ranger

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the last person on earth to really comment on this kind of thing, but... I can't be the only one who's feeling really out of place when I see Johnny Depp as Tonto? And the way he's speaking in slightly broken English?

He doesn't really fit into the role and it looks awkward as hell. But of course, no one is going to complain because he's Johnny Depp.

No, plenty of people are complaining

I assume you mean the people who yelled at the Native Appropriations blogger for not being a "true Indian" because she questioned Johnny Depp's role as Tonto?

Yeah. Seriously.

Well he is. Look who they got to play a prominent native american! You're fucking welcome ingrates!

I'm not going to see the film for that exact reason.
Same for Django Unchained. All the comments flying around by Tarantino and others... it's just awkward.

I don't see how Django is any more or less offensive than Inglorious Basterds was and it's funny how people are more sensitive to criticism of Django than Basterds

It did have a gratuitous amount of n-bombs but so does every other Tarantino film, at least this one is historically accurate in its use of the n-word

(Oh and that Lone Ranger movie looks ridiculously racist, like would it have really killed them to choose an actual Native American actor for that role instead of Depp and then dismissing the choice by saying "oh but he's .0001% Native American so it's ok"?)

A lot of people are upset with Django because of how it uses slavery as a framing device - at least, the people I've heard being upset about it. They also seem to feel a little awkward since it's a white director whose using slavery that way.

Disclaimer: Haven't seen the movie, don't intend to because Tarantino isn't my cup of tea, so I can't comment on the actual film, just what I've heard.

You could say the same thing about Basterds and the Holocaust, I mean, I still think the whole idea of a bunch of Jewish soldiers going around killing Nazis in incredibly barbaric ways is pretty problematic. I saw Django and I saw things that could be considered problematic and I saw Spike Lee's tweet about how slavery isn't a spaghetti Western and I'm sympathetic to that, but Tarantino basically did the same thing with the Holocaust

I kind of wonder if maybe white directors shouldn't touch black history in general, I read about how Spielberg got some criticism for directing The Color Purple (though in that case it was just a book adaptation, he didn't write the original material it was based on)

I'm a little torn. On one hand? I think it's a very good idea for directors/studios/companies to reach out, and try to make sure that they aren't being offensive to a community - within reason.*

On the other? I also think it's wrong to restrict what someone is allowed to take on as far as what they write or make in a creative endeavor. I can't say anything about Bastards because, again, I didn't see it.

It's basically Fuck You, This is just Pirates of the Carribean in the 'Old West': Double Your Explosions, Double Your Cash. Johnny Depp had to be in it. How else were they going to get chumps to squeeze their asses in the theater without Depp doing 'Jack Sparrow: Take 2- Hurr hurr, funny Indians.'

They should've mocapped Depp as the horse. Now, that's a movie I'd watch.

I could've tolerated if they'd done it in a respectful manner -- one of my favorite movies is "The Outsider", after all -- but this? The dead bird on his head, the crappy Engllish, the excess facepaint and feathers and beads...

Yeeeah, I think they went about it the wrong way. Admittedly, I've not seen the movie so I can't speak about the specifics in it but...It really sounds like they've kind mish-mashed different traditions into one character, and that [along with some of the stereotypical stuff I've heard it does] doesn't sit too well with me.

I saw the trailer before The Hobbit and it was incredibly awkward, imo. I love Johnny Depp but he does not need to be in everything.

When I saw the trailer, I was getting hyped for it because it looked like a silly, modern take on an Old Western, but then it showed Johnny Depp and my enthusiasm dried up. He doesn't fit.

THIS IS WHY 'WINDTALKERS' IS THE BEST MOVIE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It featured real-live Natives being stereotyped and put in a secondary role, as opposed to a real-live popular white actor playing a stereotypical Native. Better Hollywood stereotype actual Natives than fake ones.

As a fan of the Lone Ranger (what? I'm old enough to have grown up with him), the fact that this movie is coming out really hurts. Clayton Moore would be so disappointed.

I'm disappointed. I certainly won't be spending any money on this movie.

So, I have issues with new Lone Ranger, but one of them is not the "broken English" of Johnny Depp. That's not broken English. That's heavily and stereotypically accented English.

I was thinking 'wow, why couldn't they have got an actual Native American for the part of Tonto?'

And then i saw the trailer and was like 'holy crap, that's gonna suck. Maybe it's better if nobody of actual Native descent is affiliated with it. Holy crap.'
