You act like they were given a fucking iPad or something.
Guess what, I was given a Bible for my birthday a few days ago even though the person who gave it to me knew damn well I was an atheist.
I didn't accept it and later on made a secret about it and osted it to an internet community.

I took the fucking thing and gave it right back to my aunt with the words: "Thankyou, but I'm STILL not interested in joining your religion. Please give it to another Christian".

You don't need to love (or even keep) something just because you got it for free.

The Bible is a novel. Whether you subscribe to the religions and belief systems that use it as a guide doesn't change the fact that it is written word worth being familiar with.

That's the problem with atheists and Christians alike. You keep yourselves purposely ignorant to avoid uncomfortable truths.

What you described is not simply a gift, it's a passive-aggressive way of proselytizing and trying to force a belief that you don't subscribe to onto you. That's a different conversation altogether and doesn't have much to do with what I'm talking about other than the fact that this Bible was given to you as a gift. Surely there are some "gifts" that are given with the obvious knowledge that the receiver doesn't want them and that's not what I'm talking about.

If that were true, then why do atheists tend to be better informed about religion than most believers? According to a 2010 Pew Forum survey, atheists demonstrated the best overall knowledge about religion, and outstripped most Christians in knowledge about Christianity. so much this. I had an atheist friend that thought she was really showing those Christians how silly their religion was by pointing out that Jesus got put to death. She had no idea how big a part of Christian doctrine it is that Jesus went willingly to his death as a sacrifice on behalf of humankind; she simply assumed that any true Son of God would use supernatural power to overcome any earthly opposition ... and that no one else in 2,000 years had noticed this discrepancy before she came along.

She's still technically right; he was put to death. He took it willingly and gracefully, but yes, he was in fact executed. Personally, I think it's silly because I don't see how one particular guy suffering and dying is supposed to make up for all the horrible things people did to each other at that time (and are still doing today). Nobody has ever been able to explain that part to me in a way that isn't a wordier version of "because God said so."

In my experience, it's the staunchest of believers who know the least about their own religion, for one reason: they have far too much trust in their clerics, and thus don't bother fact-checking what they hear against what their scripture actually says.

Basically this. Acting like the OP should love the book because it might hurt the gift giver's feelings is ludicrous. If I had given someone a book they didn't end up liking, I would want to know so that I know not to give them anything else from that author, or something like that.
