An accurate critique. I'm trying to think of female fire-elemental who wasn't unreasonable volatile or insane.

Think, though, fire is associated with strong personality traits that are desirable in men and not in women. (Power, strength, fierceness, etc.) Fire is associated with negative stereotypes that are typically associated with women (wrath and unpredictability especially). You need a villain or intense, maybe manic, woman character, fire elemental seems the easiest.

Folks upthread mentioned Sailor Mars. In comics, Magma was pretty chill-ish, from what I remember. Fire--that is, Bea from JLI--had a bit of a temper, but nowhere near what Guy had.

Honestly, even the last bit, about needing a villain--fire's always a good go-to for villains, male or female.

True. Then you could extend the issue to making a majority of the villains fire-type. It just seems lazy. Like, all red-heads are "fiery." Cliche.

OP could be complaining that s/he's just tired of the typical volatile cliche associated with fire-types.

Would Yukiko from Persona 4 count? It's her persona that got the fire power (and the healing skills) but Yukiko is pretty much everything but unreasonably volatile or insane.

It's an incredibly tiny reference, almost a footnote. But for the record, the sun in Tolkien's mythology is guided by a female fire elemental type spirit who was one of the few of her kind to reject Sauron and stick with the good guys. She's presented as kind of wild and fierce, but still trustworthy and dependable enough to be entrusted with a really important task. (The dude guiding the Moon, by contrast, was described as kind of a dweeb who kept wandering off course to chase after her and getting scorched--hence why the moon's cycle varies and its surface is splotchy.)

Definitely awesome!

The Oran Trilogy has both an example of what the op hates and its opposite.

Shannon Hale's Enna from her Books of Bayern series is a good one. Same with Morgan Rowlands from the Sweep (Wicca) novels. The whole female line of her family has an affinity with fire and she is an extremely strong character.
