The books were inconsistent about whether she was a vegetarian or only avoided red meat specifically. But either way it was shown as being a health choice and not an animal rights thing.

Ah, it's been awhile since I read the books, so I couldn't remember the specifics. I get the feeling that they're probably something best left back in nostalgia. I know the movie hasn't aged well. Lol.
