Though I'm pretty sure I disagree with the OPs generalisations, Korra's preference for firebending is shown as representitive of her impulsiveness and lack of maturity, no? Hence her difficulty with airbending.

It's representative of her aggressive, confident and passionate personality. There isn't an implication that she will firebend less if she loses her immaturity or impulsiveness.

I've always kind of liked how when she first starts airbending after losing the other elements, she airbends like a firebender, shooting these discreet bursts of air at Amon as she backed him into that window.

Okay, I'll admit I haven't watched Korra so I'm only pulling from Avatar here but... Aang started out as extremely impulsive and immature too didn't he? That's a reason why he had so much trouble with earthbending, since earth bending is about solidity, patience, and being direct and Aang is like a twitchy squirrel half the time.

I could see her being direct, blunt, or brash making it hard for her to air bend, but not impulsivity and immaturity which Aang had plenty of, especially in early seasons.

It's more her lack of patience and spirituality. Airbending is highly spiritual and is about freedom and peace. Bending has nothing to do with maturity- capable children are quite capable of bending any element, especially air (all Air Nomads can air bend).
