Hair removal: what's your choice

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
So, we were talking hair removal with my mom and she said people don't shave any more, just wax or use epilators. I do the latter and completely love it, but I'm quite sure lots of people still shave.

Therefore I need statistic (?) data: how do you remove those pesky hairs, people?

If we're talking armpit/leg hair, I generally shave. Although I've kind of quit even doing that lately, since it's a pain in the ass and being hairy doesn't bother me. I still tweeze my eyebrows/excess facial hair, but that's about it.

I don't bother in winter, or any other time I can get away with not bothering. When I do, I use mens disposable razors - I buy them in bags of 50, so it costs like a buck a year, which is about the amount of investment I am prepared to make in body hair grooming.

I don't. Except for my face, which I either shave or pluck.

Okay, and on "special occasions" I will sometimes shave. But mostly I let it grow au natural because I'm lazy, my hair is dark and many, and no matter what I try it's never smooth anyway.

But I do know a lot of people who shave. More people who shave than wax or use epilators.

I shave my face, but otherwise I use that cream stuff. (Nair, etc.) My body and leg hair don't grow very fast though, so it's not especially often. I don't even have to shave that often, honestly.

I shave, though I haven't in a long time. It's too cold to be showing my legs off and even if it weren't, I usually don't. I do usually keep my armpit hair shaved, but again, I've been lazy lately and also don't care all that much. No one is seeing it but me and it doesn't bother me.

So I basically do it for myself, and right now can't bring myself to care.

I seriously need to tweeze my eyebrows though...they're quite bushy. (I like them a bit thick, but not overtly so. They need a good shaping.)

I've never used a epilator before so I can't comment on that, and some of them seem pretty expensive so I'll probably stick to razors.

I use tweezers on facial hair and shave elsewhere when needed. During winter I don't bother shaving my legs that often.

I haven't shaved my legs or underarms in a few years, but I used to shave regularly. I shave sometimes to remove pubic hair.

I don't need to shave my face, but if I ever have hair there, I will.

Shave below the neck, pluck eyebrows. I'll occasionally use tweezers for the stray body hair. I'd like to try waxing, but I'm too lazy/cheap to get it done professionally and figure I'll mess up badly at home. Maybe one of these days I'll try it.

I've heard epilators growing in popularity. How much are they, what are the good brands? About how long does it take to do one leg? Can they be used for armpits and ladybits?

One leg when it's been a while since the last one (say, 6 weeks or more) takes about 4 songs. Sorry, I measure my shaving in songs :)
Doing them both takes around half and hour of forty minutes (but that's because I go too long between shaves... now that it's summer and I'm doing it more often is quicker)

You can use it for armpits but you have to be careful because it may hurt your skin a little, and alcohol afterwards stings like a mofo. It takes maybe 10 minutes to do both? And lasts around 2 weeks (for summer weather and tank tops... in winter I do it monthly)

I trim my ladybits so no experience there, but allegedly you can use it there too.

(I have a Philips Satinelle, but I'm from South America so no clue about other brands or prices)

Legs and underarms: shave

Face: tweeze and wax

I've never heard of an epilator before now. *googles*

I pluck eyebrows, and shave face and underarms. Haven't removed leg hair in years.

English is not my first language and that's what google told me, but maybe there are called by other names as well.

From my admittedly limited observations, as far as legs/underarms go, shaving is more popular in the States while epilator and waxing are more popular in Europe. Have no insight into the rest of the world.

I am baffled by all the women who say they shave their faces.

How do you know they are women though?

Obviously, you're not that old and/or have no thyroid/hormone problems.

I wish I was. Or at least that my facial hair (and body hair, I have hairy boobs and patchy hair on my stomach, and a happy trail, and hobbit feet, and it grosses me out) had waited until menopause to go haywire, instead of growing like crazy in my early twenties. It's mostly black and dark brown even though I'm a blonde. I wish I had the money for laser hair removal, or even to go to the doctor and find out for sure wtf happened to my hormones.

Too much testostrone? You'll need a hormone test to find out for sure and I don't know what makes it better.

Though if you do have more testostrone, it'd be a good time to get all toned up since it'll be easier to build muscles now.

Legs and armpits: shave, and yes, even in the winter (only less often, like when I need an excuse to leave shampoo or conditioner in my hair for a few more minutes).

The only thing I do to facial hair is tweeze eyebrows. They don't get bushy or anything, so they're just kinda low maintenance. I just need to keep the shape intact. :p

Wax.

I shave when I feel like it. I can't wax or use lotions as I'm allergic to all those I've tried. THat said, I don't think it's essential, after all hair is only natural, so I only do it when I feel like it

I shave; underarms whenever I shower, since it's easy, and legs... as a special occasion. I don't tend to wear skirts without leggings, so it's really only when I want to give my boyfriend a treat (or let him do it for me while I read a book).
