Exactly this. the whole climax of the game, imo, isn't really the chantry blowing up - or rather, maybe it's represented by the chantry blowing up. It's the "breaking of the fellowship" if you will. You've got characters who essentially only hang out together because of you, some of them have friendly relationships but others literally gain affection points if you screw over, insult, even kill/sell out your other companions. In the end it's magnified because chances are, your party will not stand by you if you choose a side they disagree with, unless they really love (or hate) you. If you have Sebastian, it's impossible to keep your entire party even with max friendship/rival. It sucks, but that's what the game is actually about. that's the theme of the game, I think. it's more about fanatics and social issues than it is about "slay the evil dragon".

I guess it's hit or miss among the players, but I personally think it's a pretty interesting and unique approach to the fantasy genre. take away the magic and setting, and you have a game that's essentially real life.
