Oscar Nominations

Well, they're out. I don't know if people are touchy about such 'spoilers' here (or just don't care), but they're easy to find.

Leonardo DiCaprio must be crying tears of frustration somewhere... One day, Leo, one day you'll get yours!

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually go crazy for the Oscars, but this year...I don't care too much. And it's odd because I think this year had a lot of fantastic movies. But onto the nominations and snubs....
First, I was pretty annoyed that Best Director was a group of dudes again. Granted, they're all great directors and I'm really glad Ang Lee got a nomination (he's a favorite director of mine), I'm annoyed that Kathryn Bigelow didn't get a nomination. She deserved it. As for Ben Affleck, yeah, he deserved a nomination as well. Wow, I guess there were some really well directed films this year. Some may even argue that Quentin Tarintino deserved a nomination.
I was surprised to see Christoph Waltz get the Best Supporting Actor nomination. I was sure Leonardo Dicaprio was going to get it. He did something new, and it was an amazing performance. But then again, the Oscars loves to snub Dicaprio.

See, and this was the first show in a long time where I was pretty excited at a lot of things, mainly Beasts and Life of Pi nominated for Best Picture, Wallis for best Actress (Here's hoping she beats Lawrence, though I admit to saying that out of spite having not seen SLP), and 90% of my Animated faves were nominated (Pirates! was a surprise, and maybe it was my silly optimism that Brave would be snubbed and replaced with A Cat in Paris [Because while I like ROTG and dislike Brave, at least the latter made sense])

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you on Brave. I liked it, but I don't think it deserves an Oscar. Not really excited about the other nominations, however. I'm glad that Anne Hathaway is nominated, even though I'd have preferred to see her nominated for her Catwoman role. I'm not sure she will win though, I've heard that Amy Adams did a very good job.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think Jennifer Lawrence will win it, judging by the response to the film. They have noms in all the acting categories (which is pretty rare on its own), BP and Director. Looks like it'll be THAT film. Unless it gets nothing at all, lol. Funny how that sometimes happens.

Same here; for me it's mostly because I broke my leg and as such my movie going plans were foiled for this year. I'm really interested in seeing Silver Linings Playbook and I never got around to Beasts of the Southern Wild, but I wanted to see that.

Definitely see Silver Linings Playbook! It's by far one of my favorite movies this year. Granted, I love Jennifer Lawrence, but I don't normally care for Bradley Cooper and he was really amazing in this movie.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Cloud Atlas was completely overlooked... Score? Cinematography? Hell, the makeup department did a pretty great job. And you'd think, with the Academy's utter boner for Tom Hanks, they would have been crazy about this film.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-10 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe the Academy didn't want to reward or acknowledge yellowface.

And there was me wondering if it had been snubbed because, of the six protagonists, two were women of colour and one was a gay dude.

Re: Oscar Nominations

It was a film that people either liked or hated, and I guess the majority of the Academy voters didn't like it.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you dislike a film for whatever reason, you can still acknowledge certain things that were good about it. The score was beautiful.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen it yet (looking forward to it since I loved the book though) and maybe the cinematography/music were great, but the make-up, seriously? No.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno how people can say the makeup was bad when the vast majority of the audience walked out not even realizing some of the roles the main actors played. I had to check wikipedia and was stunned at the ones I had missed entirely because of the makeup.

Like, THIS:

is Halle Berry. Yep, Halle Berry right there.

:/ , I am sorry to hear that. I had hoped it would get a cinematography nod because I have literally never seen scene transitions as good as that in any other film ever.

I hope Wes Anderson wins this time, he deserves it.

He deserved an Oscar for Rushmore or Royal Tenenbaums, he's been losing his mojo ever since then. But to be fair, I did enjoy Moonrise Kingdom, a lot more than his previous two films

And I'm still sort of pissed off that everything Wes Anderson does gets a Criterion Collection for like... no apparent reason. I chalk it up to him ripping off of French new wave films hardcore and the people at Criterion fapping all over that

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
The Royal Tenenbaums is still my favorite film of his, and I didn't think that The Life Acquatic was as strong in comparison, but both The Darjeeling Limited and Fantastic Mr. Fox were excellent films, imo. I actually prefer both to Moonrise Kingdom, although I thought Moonrise Kingdom was well done over all.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still sad Fantastic Mr. Fox didn't win anything, although it at least had worthy competition.

I don't really care about the Oscars really, but: A movie made in Norway is nominated: Kon Tiki, and even if I haven't seen it, nor do I plan to. It makes me slightly happy. Off course we will never ever win it, but still!

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you never know! Amour has won so many awards already that the Academy might want another film to win and/or think another film is better!

The only thing I really care about is whether Jessica Chastain got nominated (she did, so we're cool) and whether or not she wins. Not even because I liked Zero Dark Thirty, she's just one of my favorite actresses and I really hope she does well.

Other than that, I don't care. Honestly at this point, I've pretty much gotten into the habit of trying as hard as I can not to get invested in the Oscars, because the Academy is just so generally terrible.

I'm so happy Paranorman got nominated. I know it probably won't win, but I still think it's great

I usually don't care, but it was cool to see Les Mis get a bunch of nominations.
