I don't know. I would've liked the movie more if it wasn't "staring CHRISTOPHER WALTZ....and this black guy". And I really like Christopher Waltz! But my particular issue with the movie isn't one that's exclusive to QT. Alot of mainstream films don't like casting non-whites in main, standalone roles. :/

Foxx had top billing, above Waltz and DiCaprio. Three of the five actors who were headlining were black.

eta: I think part of the problem here is that Django is very much a WESTERN hero, ie. a protagonist who does more staring into the distance and shooting things than he does talking. It felt familiar to me from seeing other Westerns, at least.

Erm, Jamie Foxx got star billing, though, he's on the posters, his name is mentioned everywhere. It's just many fans who are really excited about Waltz because he was so good in the last Tarantino movie, so they're happy these two are working together again (just like they are with Samuel L. Jackson). We haven't had Jamie Foxx in a Tarantino movie yet, so obviously no one's like OMG ANOTHER TARANTINO WITH JAMIE FOXX, while we ARE really excited about another Tarantino with Christoph Waltz.

Christoph Waltz, not Christopher. :)

But... did you watch the movie

I don't want to spoil anyone who hasn't seen the film but
SPOILERS

Waltz dies like 3/4th or 2/3rds of the way into the movie and Django is the hero, Waltz was kinda like Obi-Wan Kenobi to Foxx's Luke Skywalker, if you will

The first time I saw it I thought it was an interesting take on the traditional mentor-who-dies-halfway-through/student-protagonist relationship, because while Schultz is a cool guy he's racist in a lot of ways and there's that tension between them, because of Schultz's condescension.

the second time, I shipped it

lmao me too. and I'm so...conflicted about it

Um, Schultz was not a racist...was he condescending? Yes, but it was in general. Not to mention the fact that he admired Django for being a real life Siegfreid.

Exactly - he would up respecting Django by means of...saying he was the 'real life' version of a white hero. Early in the movie, Schultz admitted he was making use of slavery, and was regularly calling Django 'boy' - he seemed to be belittling Django a lot before he started seeing Django & Brunhilde as white German people. And Schultz decided to be a prideful dick and shoot Candie when it would have been much, much more beneficial to Django if he'd walked away. Obviously that relationship completely fits with the era, and one thing I thought Foxx and Waltz were trying to get across there was how unequal the relationship between Django and Schultz inherently was, even after Django was freed.

Somebody fell asleep halfway through the movie...
