Favorite Sad Episodes of Generally Happy Shows

[personal profile] escapedsnake911 2013-01-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was rewatching "I Remember You", the Ice King+Marceline backstory episode of Adventure Time. Now, the show has a lot of genuinely sad things built into its very fabric, being set in a dystopia where a preteen boy raised by dogs is the last human alive. But "I Remember You" is a whole other level in tragedy, and I literally cannot watch it without crying.

So what are the episodes of comedy shows that hit you right in the tear ducts?

("Jurassic Bark" from Futurama is a given, because damn)

I Remember You killlls me whenever I watch it

this is probably dumb, but the episode of South Park called "Cash For Gold" had a part that made me cry a little. I guess the whole premisis of the episode is a little sad (it's about Stan trying to get that "buy this awesome jewelry for a one time low offer" channel shut down because they're scamming money from elderly people who often don't even remember making the purchase due to dementia) though, in South Park fashion, it's not exactly treated as such...until the part where Grandpa Marsh is talking about how the last time he was happy was when his dog was still alive and how he loved that dog with all of his heart...and now he can't even picture what she looked like. idk, it just got to me I guess

Oh god, I had completely forgotten about "Cash for Gold", but yeah, some serious tearjerker action.

I know that there have been a handful of Simpsons episodes to make me tear up, but the only specific one I remember right now is the one where Homer's mom died (...or maybe it was the one where she pretended to die? I can't remember)

oh wait, I remember another one. It was that one where Bart finally realizes that he needs to buckle down and study or else he'll get held back. He prays, and prays for a snowday so he can have time to catch up on studying. And he gets one. And he studies as hard as he can so he can pass a test and not be held back and he...fails the test. He put in honest to God effort to better himself and it...just didn't pay off. When he started crying because he couldn't handle the fact that even when he DID actually try in school he was still a failure, it got to me. I'm pretty sure the Nostalgia Critic did a special that mentioned this episode actually

God, Futurama really knows how to punch to the gut with unexpected tragedy.

I was just about to post this. I watched it yesterday and had forgotten the gut punch ending. The episode with Fry's dog is also pretty sad.

This is a sad level in a generally happy video game, but you know that level in Elite Beat Agents? The Christmas one?

Every time it reduces me to a horrible sobbing wreck. Every single time, without fail.

Going old-school here:
* The Home Improvement episode where Randy might have cancer and might die.
* The Growing Pains episode where Sandy dies. The other one where Maggie's dad dies.
* The Wonder Years episode where Kevin retakes his math final and aces it after failing it after his teacher dies.
* The 8 Simple Rules episodes after John Ritter died.

Sensing a theme here? If somebody has died on a sitcom, I've probably cried over it.

There's an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender called Tales from Ba Sing Se that tells a few smaller stories, one of which is Iroh mourning his son who died in the siege on Ba Sing Se. It's all the sadder since that scene ends with a memorial to the actor who voiced Iroh.

I always start crying in that episode during Momo's Tale and kind of recover myself for Zuko's Tale, but then I just fall apart completely during Iroh's Tale and the dedication to Mako. That song is so haunting and just thinking about it makes me a little weepy.
