I once attempted to read Homestuck- I got about three hours in before giving up, and there were no signs of the trolls at all.

I didn't start reading because of the trolls, but it's weird how they're so prominent in fandom compared to the rest of the characters. Maybe they really are that awesome, but it seems that Homestuck just isn't my thing.

Yeah, they didn't come in until act V. Some people in the fandom were apparently upset when they were introduced, because they only cared about the kids; others loved them and claimed they were the best.

mostly, yeah. they were introduced in an intermission starting here. they don't have a whole lot to do with the main story (at least so far, aside from like two of the characters that show up in the intermission). so it'll make sense for the most part, iirc.
