Oh anon, join the party. Having been pretty active in the BE fandom and a giant Gillian fan, the Gillian-hate is exhausting. I especially love the double standard, because Gyp can set people on fucking fire and he's OMG SO AWSUM!!!1!! and Gillian is a heinous bitch who should be killed because of her abuse of Jimmy and because she was mean to Poor Woobie Richard.

Uhm, sorry, but Gil deserves all that hate. Fucking her with her son and then literally fucking him, and all that hateful behavior with Angela.

I understand that she was raped as a child and all, but that really doesn't change the fact she was a horrible human being.

I really don't get the stanning for characters like the ones on BE or Mad Men. They're all portrayed as morally grey in their shows, and yet there are Betty stans angry at people who seem to like Don better, Peggy stans upset at Pete stans and so on. I mean, I'd be able to sympathize more if it was a fandom like Torchwood, where people hate on Gwen (and, by extension, Eve Myles) for silly reasons, but not so much like BE.

but the thing is... among the morally grey characters, the male ones still are cut more slack.
Using one of your own examples, Pete has blackmailed his boss, raped a woman and cheated on Trudy several times. Peggy slept with a married man once, and it nearly ruined her life. You can't tell me that regarding him as a better person is not a double standard.

I'm a fan of Peggy Olson, but I'm pretty sure I acknowledge the fact that she's not a perfect human being. I just love her character so much. (Hoping this is what stanning means anyway, welp!)

I understand that Gillian is terrible, because she's such a conniving bitch. Using your son for your own selfish ends, even after he's died, so fucked up. I hate a lot of things she does, but on the same level, I do feel bad for her. She's doing what she does because she needs to survive. I understand that she's a complex character.

What pisses me off about the hate that she gets is everyone is willing to forgive Jimmy for doing all the bad things he's done. Everyone can forgive Nucky for all the bad things he's done. But Gillian, fuck that bitch. Kill her for all the bad things she's done. I don't get it. They've done morally grey shit as well. Why do they get the free pass to be liked and not want to be killed off, but Gillian is the one the fans want to be killed off?

Ulgh, and don't get me started with the hate Margaret gets. She's stupid, and a lot of the choices she's made angers me, but Nucky isn't some hurt puppy she wounded and she should be punished for doing such things to him.

I love BE, but i don't do the fandom - i had *no clue* there was hate for any of the women! Wow, that's...sad. They all rock. Gillian is kind of a horrible person in a lot of ways but wow, can you blame her? She has had a horrible, horrible life.

But wow - i can't think of a single woman in the show that i hate. BAH to all haters!

actual queen of my life, not even lying. She is Shakespearean. I fucking love her. If it weren't for Richard (and possibly Al) she'd be my favourite person on the show, and even as-is I think it's probably a tie.

THANK YOU! I wouldn't say Gillian is my favorite, because there are so many characters on this show I love, but she is a FANTASTIC character! She's so fucked up, but I can understand on some level why she does some of the things she does.
