Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

People put that stuff in the tags because they generally know it's pretty self-indulgent and don't want to clog up posts with it. It's seen mostly as a courtesy thing. I'd rather that than someone typing out long-ass meta about something I really don't care about on a gif set.

Why would people combine meta with a gif set? Can't they make a separate entry?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You would think so, but some people feel the need to inject their Very Important Opinions into everything. I've seen gifsets with multiple super-lengthy meta comments, sometimes from multiple users. Sometimes the discussion is good, but sometimes it also veers way off course and occasionally it even turns nasty (character/ship bashing, etc). I think part of the problem is that Tumblr is just not good for in-depth discussion, but I definitely prefer tag essays to post hijacking.

If the meta is long, some people do make separate entries. If it's not something longer than a paragraph, sometimes it goes in the tags of the post that inspired it. The visual aid is good, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the meta is often about the scene shown in the gif set.

no

precisely. it's really not that difficult to understand :/

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not my experience. Usually people put things in tags when they're trying to be cute or tongue in cheek or whatever. Then people start quoting the tags and replying to tags in a really obnoxious long reblogging chain.

Then they can put that shit behind a fucking cut, cuz even the tag essay can take up more space on dahsboards, just like a long ass text post.

No fucking excuse.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, you can't put text-cuts into photo posts without putting the code for one into the HTML (though it's a pretty simple code, imo) because the button doesn't show up in the rich text editor.

You can add "captions" that are basically text posts that you CAN put "read more" cuts into.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
...that's what I was talking about?

Again, to reiterate, if you try putting a read-more into the caption of a photo post (like an actual photo post, not something that has a photo pasted into a text post), you can't do it unless you go into the HTML editor, because the button for it doesn't show up on the Rich Text Editor (AKA the one with the buttons for bold, italic, etc.) like it does for text posts, at least not on my end.

So yes, I agree, you can put them in there, but it is not evident that it's a possibility because there's not a button indicating so and the less HTML-inclined might not know the code for doing it manually.

Yeah, but aren't the tag essays (such as the type the secret OP used in her pic) usually put into the post itself? Tumblr usually restricts how many tags show up on your dash as you're scrolling through, to keep it clean... but if people lift the tags (or, more likely, lift the tagging STYLE) in order to include huge buckets of text in the post, then that kind of totally defeats the point of not wanting "to clog up posts with it."

Idk. I can sort of see what the secret OP is getting at. I don't think they are criticizing actual tags that appear in the actual tag section of a post. I think they are criticizing people who adopt tagging style as a kind of "look at me" writing gimmick. Which, hey, I've seen used in some pretty hilarious ways... but that doesn't mean it can't get to be a bit wearying on the eye if someone makes up a fake tag set that goes on and on for that long.

#tags #being cool on the internet #is it ever possible to be cool on the internet? #i wonder

you can copy the tags somebody else tagged a post with on your dash, and then copy them into the post body, they'll show up as links. it's usually somebody doing that with somebody else's tags rather than writing them in that way themselves.

though there's always dumbasses with the #YOLO shit but i don't think that's what you mean.
herongale: (haruna- heh heh!)

[personal profile] herongale 2013-01-12 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, really? I did not know this. :) And here I was trying to sound all knowledgeable and stuff, lol.

Well, that is good to know!

haha, it took me a really embarrassingly long time to figure out that that's how you do that myself, i didn't want to ask anybody and find out it was something ridiculously easy (and it was!). it's a bit confusing to figure out who those tags were actually written by sometimes, but yeah nobody really purposely writes them in like that, it's just somebody wanting to comment on those tags or just draw attention to them, usually.

Posts with more then 6 tags and/or Any tag longer then 10 words are too fucking long. That's what a post is for.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Your opinion is always wrong.

Hey, the other nonnie stopped eating and breathing! I hope you're happy now. In fact, I rather suspect you are. ;)

I tend to agree with you.

I sometimes use more tags than 6 for, say, a long fic rec post, but I subscribe to the idea that most of the content should be in the post rather than ancillary material.
