I have nothing against using tags for a throwaway comment, but tag essays are fucking obnoxious.

People put that stuff in the tags because they generally know it's pretty self-indulgent and don't want to clog up posts with it. It's seen mostly as a courtesy thing. I'd rather that than someone typing out long-ass meta about something I really don't care about on a gif set.

I rather like tag essays...when they're not pretentious and pulling up feelings that aren't there.

I don't tumblr, so I don't really care there, but on AO3 it's a total abuse of the system. I use the tags to select the fics I want to read, not to learn about the authors random ~feels~. It hogs room on the page without adding a single useful thing to learn more about the story. It makes me really wonder if the author really cares if people to read her story, or if she's just using the archive as a friending meme.

Agreed, but sometimes I do tag commentary myself, usually when I'm writing something that I wouldn't necessarily want the OP to see I'd added when they saw the "reblogged by" thing on their dash.

But in general, yeah. Not my favorite thing to do, read tag essays.

I don't like tag essays, that much is true (although I don't mind a couple of comments put as tags), but I don't understand the "I don't give a shit about the author's feelings" sentiment. At all. If you're reading said author, you clearly are at least willing to try to give some shit about their feelings/opinions? Because that's what fanfiction is?

I think that if you have such important opinions to write them at length you might as well do it on the post itself, and it's so annoying to think that people have built this hang-up on writing meaningful stuff on posts that ARE THERE FOR JUST THAT. I get writing a short tag comment if you're reblogging someone's art or something, but if you don't want to clog THAT up, just write a separate post with your ridiculously self-important opinions FUCK

I skip them when I can. I have an awful urge to read everything on my screen, and while I often stop myself it makes these tumblr tag essays frustrating as hell. (Especially since I hate all the sudden stops, run on sentences and lack of punctuation.)

People can do what they want and all that, I'm just not a big fan.

Well, see, I feel like you get caught between a rock and a hard place with this situation. Sometimes I have things that I want to say that specifically relate to a series of pictures or gif sets that have been posted, but it's considered extremely bad form to repost those pics/gifs rather than reblogging them, but it's also considered extremely rude to attach your own thoughts/rambles/fic bits onto them. So what do you do? You can't reblog with a new post, and you can't post in the caption, so the tags are all that's left.

I'm tired of all these *fandom* secrets about general tumblr issues by old fogies who just hate people doing things differently. OMG YOU'RE DOING TUMBLR DIFFERENTLY THAN ME AND I AM ALWAYS RIGHT! HOW HORRENDOUS! YOU YOUNG DUMB KIDS, STOP ENJOYING THINGS YOUR WAY! JFC. Go make tumblrsecrets or something.

I would 100% prefer to have rants in tags than on my actual art posts, unless it's something specifically asking for/provoking lengthy pseudo-meta ramblings by everyone and their grandmother; or if someone has something really important to say about it that should be read by all. Tags are simple to ignore. There are many decent reasons for tag essays (see above posts). Do I add tag rants in LJ or AO3? NO. But tumblr? Yes. Get over it.

And I'm getting really pissed off with the "tumblr is only for stupid children" mantra that is going on here just cuz everyone's bitter that LJ is dying (I am sad about this as well, jsyk). Not everyone is a vapid twit, and if that's *all* you see, well, then sorry to say but YOU ARE doing tumblr wrong.

I hate essays in tags, too. A comment or two I can take, but essays? Annoying. Okay, most times it's something I can scroll past because I don't really care to stop and ready (I've had enough of essays on how the fact Tom Hiddleston looked to his left and scratched his butt in this or that scene shows perfectly what a poor tormented soul Loki is, tbh), but sometimes it's stuff I may be interesting in reading... and I don't because having to read through the tags just hurts my eyes.

My dislike for tag essays is a big part of why I don't really communicate on Tumblr. If it's rude to add comments in the body of the post, then I just won't comment.

I think tag meta can be done really well when it's kept short.

I can see why it's annoying to some, yeah, but tumblr doesn't even wrap tags, so all you get is a single line of easy-to-ignore tiny grey text. And if it's copy-pasted into the captions, then it's not so hard to read anymore, right?

(Then again, I feel like the only one who actually wholeheartedly likes tumblr culture, complete with feels and tyPING LIKe THiS and everything, on f!s...)

Agreed! I don't mind brief commentary in the tags, but when it gets to a certain extent just put it in the text section :/

It's easier to read when it's in the text section and when it's in tags you have to work for it, it's even more difficult depending on the layout.
