Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

Well, see, I feel like you get caught between a rock and a hard place with this situation. Sometimes I have things that I want to say that specifically relate to a series of pictures or gif sets that have been posted, but it's considered extremely bad form to repost those pics/gifs rather than reblogging them, but it's also considered extremely rude to attach your own thoughts/rambles/fic bits onto them. So what do you do? You can't reblog with a new post, and you can't post in the caption, so the tags are all that's left.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Post a link to the original post and ramble on?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you reblog the picture/gifset, and then make a separate post with your thoughts and feelings about them, and include a link to the reblogged post? I don't tumblr, but that seems vaguely logical to me. I could even understand a "#see my next post for commentary" tag.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That's irritating.

When you just want to say a few sentences/single paragraph about something that you recognise is just a flail-y self-indulgent over-reaction to that scene, why bother? It's not meant to be taken so seriously as a real post. And quite frankly most people on tumblr have the attention span of a gnat (partly due to the constant stream of new posts on dashboards). If you want to make a specific comment about a specific gifset, no one's going to bother clicking a link to see what you're talking about. Not gonna happen.

Also people seem to be assuming that HUGELY massive tag rants are common. They're not. Not in my fandoms anyway. Really large ones only occur on a rare occasion. MOST people who do have actual real meta to write on a topic do so in a post of their own. Tags are just for a much more casual & visceral explosion of thoughts.

It's just efficient and effective to spew some feelings into a tag if you're not really that serious about the meta.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
All of this. Most people use the tags for a throwaway sentence or two, maybe a paragraph at best. In-depth tag meta rants aren't as common as some people make them seem.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Since when is it rude to post your thoughts underneath a rebloged gif set?

The literally the point of Tumblr is to do that.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Some people view it as rude because it can clutter up the post and also because when you add that info to the post itself, the OP is going to have a notif including at least part of that on their dash (which is harder to ignore than a simple reblog notif where you only see the tags if you check). There are a lot of people who still do it, but it can get annoying, especially if the comments that you include venture into ship/character bashing territory (it happens, trust me) or if you, say, feel the great and burning need to talk at length about your OTP on a gifset that is for another pairing, doesn't even contain them, or is from another fandom altogether (SHERLOCK FANDOM, I AM LOOKING AT YOU). There are also some people who will have back-and-forth and conversations with friends on someone else's post and that can also get irritating, since basically no one cares except the people having said conversation. I actually use tags sometimes to tag friends and comment about things I think they might like.

Some people are more or less okay with it, depending, but a lot of times if I see a gifset that I like with a shit ton of comments on it, I'll reblog it straight from the OP, since it's less dash clutter and most of the people I follow really don't give a shit about someone's deep and abiding feelings about whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
So basically because some people were being dicks about what they said underneath other peoples posts it became rude for anyone to say anything?

Fuck that noise.

(Also, it's really not that much harder to ignore the reblog with comment motif than just the reblog motif.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-14 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm getting flashblacks to the last tumblr-sucks discussion, the upshots of which were 'There needs to be a more organic means of holding a conversation on tumblr' and 'Why can't people on tumblr use tags to describe and categorize posts, which is the purpose of tags!'.

So the two problems are connected, I guess! Ah, tumblr.

Or, without cutting out the part that has source links/credit, you can DELETE the other posts (other people will find them, trust me) and write your OWN commentary in the nice, empty space provided.

"but it's also considered extremely rude to attach your own thoughts/rambles/fic bits onto them."

I have never seen or been aware of this, and I've been using Tumblr for a couple years. Why is it rude?

I've been jumped on multiple times for adding fic bits to a gif set. Maybe it's different from fandom to fandom, and it's just in my particular fandom? I've only been in one fandom on Tumblr, so I don't know. I just know I've been raked over coals for it.

i follow several people who do a lot of reblog writing/whatever you wanna call it and they usually send the OP an ask asking whether they mind or not, or if they could repost whatever it is to go with the fic or just link it. have you tried doing that first? some artists love it but some consider it hijacking their art :/

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
... why the fuck are they on Tumblr then?

The literal point of Tumblr is to reblog with comments.

[personal profile] rivia 2013-01-13 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
from what i understand artists then feel like the post is getting reblogged for the comment, not for their art, and i can understand that.

whatever intended purpose the creators of tumblr had, it's taken on a life of its own, arguing that it's not the 'point' of it is silly.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's a shitty convention and the people who came up with it are ridiculous - Tumblr's PURPOSE is to reblog and comment on stuff. Seriously, that's the entire point of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr's point is whatever you want it to be. Some people use it to comment (I am one of these, personally), but some people use it more as an image bookmarking site. Personal preference.

When you reblog, you can add stuff to the post/underneath it. Reblogging is just that, reblogging. You post it to your own blog - with a continuous link to the original post, but it's still a new post on your blog.
