Notes:
Sorry, early today!
Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

And I'm getting tired of all this "don't use Tumblr if you don't like it" BS. We aren't upset that Tumblr exists and it sucks, we're upset that more and more the only fandom activity to be found is all on Tumblr, except what IS there is just...nonsense. Pretty pictures and nonsense. Some of us want more out of fandom, but it's all gone because everyone is over on Tumblr (where you have to be there 24/7 to get everything), and over on Tumblr nothing interesting is happening because everyone is too busy reblogging gif sets and acting like an echo chamber instead of meaningful interaction.
Not everyone is a vapid twit, and if that's *all* you see, well, then sorry to say but YOU ARE doing tumblr wrong.
Really? Where, exactly, are the discussions, meta, debates, ect.? Because I have yet to see those. At most you get the occasional meta, and then people repost over and over and over again like sheep, and even THAT is the exception rather than the rule. So far, I've been using Tumblr exactly as all the "right" users have been saying to, and I haven't seen any difference or anything new.
I would 100% prefer to have rants in tags than on my actual art posts, unless it's something specifically asking for/provoking lengthy pseudo-meta ramblings by everyone and their grandmother
Way to miss OP's point. The "tag essays" are exactly that kind of pseudo-meta ramblings they're talking about, and that's exactly the sort of thing that shouldn't be tags. It's a pain in the ass to #read #everything #liek #DIS, so why the hell are you writing such long essays that way? Why not put it in the fucking post where it belongs? That's why the post exists. Tags are to find things, posts are to comment on things.
I don't want fandom to be all tags, but with Tumblr culture, that's exactly what's happening.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)And I hate to break it to you, but the tags may have originally been meant for sorting/organizational purposes, but this is the Internet, and something's original intended use is not always going to be what people use it for. LJ itself wasn't originally intended for half the shit it's used for, like fic, but people saw a way to use it that benefited them and took advantage of it. Dislike it all you want, but that's the way the Internet works.

Except fandom's basic structure stuck around through almost all of these, and they still centered around people talking to one another, not talking at an echo chamber or blasting pretty pictures at each other mindlessly.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)I agree. If you're a fan who's not interested in the Tumblr experience, where exactly do you go for fandom these days?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-14 07:20 am (UTC)(link)(It makes me sad sometimes to think of kids just getting into fandoms these days who are going to be taught that there's nothing else to do but reblog pictures, but I don't want to drag WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN into it ;). )
