Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

same situation here. I've used computers for... 16 years. I moved out three years ago and it's still somehow my fault that the family computer is slow.

I can tell you why it's slow:
a) it's simply a shitty cheap supermarket computer (and old, too)
b) my dad regularly googles "computer is slow" and clicks the first three links with downloads that should fix it (cough, malware). I remove it all every time I visit. when I come back -- it's back, too. he is also convinced that each icon next to the clock uses up ALL THE RAM and I have to tell him every time that no, I will not uninstall our anti-virus application because it has a little icon.
c) Windows Vista

...at least he doesn't want me to download RAM, I guess?

edit: he also uses the AOL browser.

it's really sad. on speedtest.net or wherever, there's a banner ad that looks very much like part of the site that goes "USE THIS APP TO DELETE ALL THE BAD USELESS FILES FROM YOUR PC FIRST!!!!!1!!". of course he clicks that.

I mean, most of ~us (young people!) can easily distinguish a banner ad from a legit part of a website OR know how to hide ads completely... the only time I have trouble with that is when I want to download stuff and there's 300 "download" buttons and the site itself has no overall distinguishable theme. then I hover and look at the URLs, so... lksdfjldsfadsjfl

I think I have to give him some sort of The Talk soon. "father, there are bad people websites on the internet... and very often they pretend to be something that they are not..."

Dear GOD, the AOL browser? WHY?

Get him Firefox and Chrome with adblock or something. Serious, good god D:

200 years ago we used AOL internet because it was literally the ~only place that offered internets where we lived. We only switched over like five years ago... So I guess he got used to it?

I installed Opera and it's set as the default browser, but he still believes it's necessary to use AOL to get connected to the internet............

It can be worse. Think dial-up internet and making sure no one else is on the phone first XD
